Cuturable heterotrophic bacterial counts (viable counts: VC) by surface plating on ZoBell medium and total bacterial counts (TC) by epifluorescence microscopy were carried out in sea water off the southwest coast of India during the monsoon. TC were three orders of magnitude higher than VC. Pseudomonas/Alteromonas group I was dominant in both nearshore and offshore regions. Pigmented bacteria were more abundant in offshore stations and showed multiple antibiotic resistance. Statistically there was found to be no significant differences in bacterial number and their activities between offshore and nearshore isolates. Nevertheless, the former tend to be more versatile and resistant to metals and drugs. |

A seasonal study on the occurrence and distribution of total aerobic microbial population (TMP), total aerobic heterotrophic bacteria (THB), actinomycetes and fungi in the sediments of Vellar Estuary, South India (11 degree 29'N 79 degree 46'E) was carried out during Jan. to Dec. 1975. Sediment samples were collected at monthly intervals, from 4 stations and analysed microbiologically. In general, bacterial population was found to be dominant followed by actinomycetes and fungi. The max peak for TMP, THB and fungi were recorded in Nov. in all stations. Monsoon season supported TMP, THB and fungi to a high level and it was summer for actinomycetes. Statistical analysis (Kendall's tau) showed a significantly positive correlation among TMP, THB, actinomycetes... |

Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) have been enumerated and physiologically characterized in three mangrove stations along the Zuari estuary. The substrates for counting were lactate, acetate, propionate, butyrate and benzoate. Benzoate oxidizing SRB were widespread and occurred in numbers up to 6.62 x 10(3)/g dry sediment. The next highest in number were lactate utilizing SRB. On an average there were more propionate and butyrate utilizers than acetate utilizers. While Agasaim at the mouth of the estuary harboured highest number of lactate oxidizers, none were detected at Mirabaug upstream during the samplings. The SRB shared many characteristics with Desulfovibrio desulfuricans, D. desulfuricans aestuarii, D. salexigens, Desulfotomaculum orientis, D.... |

During the austral summer, we examined the bacterial population along the cruise track extending from 70degrees S and 18degrees E to 30degrees S and 35degrees E. During the cruise, three distinct fractions of the bacterioplankton viz. total count, total direct viable and retrievable counts were simultaneously enumerated in these waters. In the stations south of the convergent region designated as section I the population ranged within 10(8-9) L-1 whereas in the north of the region designated as section 11 they were one order higher and ranged from 10(9-10) L-1. The percentage of viability in the region was high corresponding to the generally high chlorophyll and primary productivity encountered in the eastern Aghulas bank. The study substantiates the... |
