| Alpacas are a species that present physiological, anatomical, morphological and behavioural distinctive characteristics compared to other species used in animal production. Empirical observation of a herd, grazing under time management controlled conditions, allowed to approximate some initial observations about the effect of alpacas in the management of ecosystems. Larger green matter availability in the paddocks grazed by alpacas, evident natural weed control, better plants distribution and increasing stocking capacity were the relevant observed issues. | Farms and farming are major contributors to the world economy, directly responsible for a large part of GDP. These achievements are not trivial and imply that farms are being managed in reasonably effective ways, else agricultural industries would not be sustained. However the study of Farm Management within Australia has been limited over recent decades. Is it contributing to better farm management or merely cataloguing what has happened? | This paper contains instructions for intending referees of the AFBM Journal, - Australian Farm Business and Farming Systems Management Journal – a refereed publication of the Australian Farm Business Management Network (i.e. AFBMNetwork). The authors want to ensure that: (1) the papers submitted to AFBM Journal will have a common standard of evaluation; (2) the referees will make an informed decision, while optimising their time; and (3) the refereeing opportunity will encourage and uphold the author’s interest in publishing. Logistical issues in the process of refereeing professional publications are summarised. The paper contains a refereeing format to be used by the members of the Referee Panel of AFBM Journal. |

| Under the sponsorship of the University of Sydney, on 5-6th December 2002 the future of farm management in Australia was discussed. The fundamental conclusion achieved by key primary industry representatives, corporate executives, academics, consultants and researchers is that farm management will have a more significant role to play in the future than previously in servicing the primary sector. The idea of farm management as a profession was proposed.
