Endophytic Microbiota Associated with the Root Tips and Leaves of Baccharis dracunculifolia 52
Santana,Raiana S. M.; Fernandes,G. W.; Ávila,Marcelo P.; Reis,Mariana P.; Araújo,Flávio M. G. de; Salim,Anna C. M.; Oliveira,Guilherme; Chartone-Souza,Edmar; Nascimento,Andréa M. A..
ABSTRACT Although endophytic bacteria impact the health, and ultimately the fitness, of their hosts, our understanding of the diversity of endophytic species remains limited. Here we report on the endophytic microbiota inhabiting the roots, healthy leaves and leaves attacked by a gall-inducing insect of Baccharis dracunculifolia, a species of major economic relevance in South America, using 16S rRNA gene new generation sequencing. Rhodoplanes and Nitrospira were well represented in the communities of roots and leaves; known to be important for nitrogen cycling. The difference in bacterial diversity between healthy and galled leaves was not pronounced. The leaves seem to harbor specialized bacteria with high tolerances to abiotic stresses such as wide...

Synergic interaction between ascorbic acid and antibiotics against Pseudomonas aeruginosa 52
Cursino,Luciana; Chartone-Souza,Edmar; Nascimento,Andréa Maria Amaral.
Studies were carried out on in vitro combination of ascorbic acid (AA) with six antibiotics against 12 multi-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates. Synergic activity was detected with AA chloramphenicol, kanamycin, streptomycin and tetracycline. Indifference was observed to any antibiotics and antagonism only for chloramphenicol. Results indicated that multiresistant P. aeruginosa was affected by combination of AA and antibiotics. Future research on ascorbic acid-antimicrobial interactions may find new methods to control strains of multiresistant P. aeruginosa.

Measurement of volatilized mercury by a mini-system: a simple, reliable and reproducible technique 52
Cursino,Luciana; Mattos,Silvânia V. M.; Silva,Nilton O.; Chartone-Souza,Edmar; Nascimento,Andréa M. A..
A simple and easy new technique for volatilized mercury determination in biological systems was developed. This technique is fast and sensitive and can overcome the problems that arise due to the extremely low readings during the measurements and reproducibility in biological material (bacteria). It measures directly the volatilized metallic mercury of bacteria by means of a chemical adsorbent in a coupled mini-system, as a modified technique for mercury in air analysis. It is potentially of interest to the bioremediation and bacterial mercury resistance communities

Chromobacterium sp. from the tropics: detection and diversity of phytase activity 58
Costa,Patrícia S; Nascimento,Andréa M.A; Lima-Bittencourt,Cláudia I; Chartone-Souza,Edmar; Santos,Fabrício R; Vilas-Boas,Adlane.
Phytases are a group of enzymes that catalyze phytic acid hydrolysis with release of phosphorus (P). The ability of Chromobacterium sp. to produce phytase was detected in 115 out of 118 candidate bacteria isolated from different Brazilian biomas. This is the first report revealing the genus Chromobacterium as phytase producer.

Recent updated aspects of colicins of Enterobacteriaceae 58
Cursino,Luciana; Šmarda,Jan; Chartone-Souza,Edmar; Nascimento,Andréa M.A..
The colicins are protein compounds produced by, and active against, Escherichia coli and others members of Enterobacteriaceae family. At least 34 different colicins have been described and found to share an interesting number of features. In the present review we focus on the major characteristics of colicins of gram-negative bacteria and explore their production and practical applications. The colicins are protein compounds produced by, and active against, Escherichia coli and others members of Enterobacteriaceae family.
