Deep structure of the northern Kerguelen Plateau and hotspot-related activity ArchiMer

Seismic refraction profiles were carried out in 1983 and 1987 throughout the Kerguelen Isles (southern Indian Ocean, Terres Australes and Antarctiques Francaises, TAAF) and thereafter at sea on the Kerguelen-Heard Plateau during the MD66/KeOBS cruise in 1991. These profiles substantiate the existence of oceanic-type crust beneath the Kerguelen-Heard Plateau stretching from 46 degrees S to 55 degrees S, including the archipelago. Seismic velocities within both structures are in the range of those encountered in 'standard' oceanic crust. full-scale mechanical prototype line was deployed to a depth of 2500 m to test the leak tightness of the electronics containers and the pressure-resistant properties of an electromechanical cable under evaluation for use in the ANTARES deep-sea neutrino telescope. During a month-long immersion study, line parameter data were taken using miniature autonomous data loggers and shore-based optical time domain reflectometry. Early development of the southern Kerguelen Plateau (Indian Ocean) from shallow wide-angle ocean bottom seismometer and multichannel seismic reflection data ArchiMer

We examine the early geological history of the southern Kerguelen Plateau (Indian Ocean) using ocean bottom seismometer (OBS), multichannel seismic (MCS), and Ocean Drilling Program data. Velocity-depth models in the sedimentary Raggatt Basin are constrained by near-range OBS data (refractions and reflections, including multiples and converted shear waves) and migrated MCS data. The models elucidate the significance of lower Cretaceous lava flows, Albian to Coniacian/Santonian terrestrial and terrigenous sediment, and Maastrichtian and Paleocene seismic sequences. Small-scale crustal variability within an intraplate structure: the Crozet Bank (southern Indian Ocean) ArchiMer

The Crozet Bank, the easternmost region of the Crozet Plateau (austral Indian Ocean), is capped by two groups of islands which form the Crozet Archipelago (Terres Australes and Antarctiques Francaises). A N-S-trending 2 km deep basin, the Indivat Basin, extends between the two groups of islands and bisects the Crozet Bank into two separate domains. The interpretation of the KeOBS8 seismic refraction profile shot during the KeOBS/MD66 cruise (January-February 1991) over the eastern Crozet Plateau was carried out by ray tracing and the computation of synthetic seismograms. Perturbation to the lithosphere along the hotspot track of La Reunion from an offshore-onshore seismic transect ArchiMer

A 250 km long NE-SW lithospheric transect spanning the 40 km wide island of La Reunion and its submarine edifice is derived from lines of air Sun shots at sea on either side, along the assumed hotspot trace. Seismic records were obtained from an array spanning the whole transect and including sea bottom and land receivers, providing a system of reversed and overlapping observations. Low seismic velocity, and hence density, is found on average for the whole edifice above the oceanic plate. We attribute high-velocity anomalies within the edifice to an intrusive core confined under the central northern quarter of the island-crossing segment. Deep Sea Net: an affordable and expandable solution for deep sea sensor networks ArchiMer

Deep Sea Net is a new concept of deep sea sensor network built from fiber optic micro cable and battery operated IP access nodes. Deep Sea Net fiber optic transport segments are deployed directly from a standard ROV, avoiding the use of a costly cable layer ship. Deployment skid is abandoned on user site ready to connect local sensors and next transport segment. Deep Sea Net is a low consumption network which can be waked on user (or sensor) demand. Lithium batteries and fine power management will give 10 years of autonomy with ¼ of hour operation per day. The innovative approach of Deep Sea Net will permit to build, extend and maintain future sensor networks at very competitive prices.

The New Hebrides back-arc troughs are restricted to the southern and northern rear of the arc. Lack of trough in the central part is related to the compression induced by the collision of the d'Entrecasteaux ridge and the New Hebrides arc. The southern troughs are 50-60 km wide and are composed of one or two grabens striking N130-140 degree , while the northern troughs extend over 70 km wide and are composed of a succession of N-S trending grabens, horsts and half-grabens. Although the location and the main trend (N150 degree ) of the troughs indicate that they are largely guided by the subduction, the direction of extension (N40-45 degree ) is clearly oblique to the volcanic line and thus does not seem related to the subduction process. Structure and development of a microcontinent: Elan Bank in the southern Indian Ocean ArchiMer

Microcontinents appear to commonly form on young continental margins close to hot spots, but difficulties in understanding their geology and evolution have inhibited assessment of their global distribution and significance. Thick volcanic accumulations in areas affected by hot spot magmatism only complicate the issue. Elan Bank, a large western salient of the Kerguelen Plateau, is a microcontinent that originally lay between India and Antarctica in Gondwana. Recent regional plate tectonic reconstructions suggest that during Gondwana breakup, Elan Bank and India initially separated from Antarctica, and Elan Bank became isolated in the Southern Ocean via a ridge jump to the north between Elan Bank and India.
