Age, growth and mortality of the striped seabream Lithognathus mormyrus (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Gulf of Tunis (Central Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Khaldi, Asma; Chater, Ines; Elleboode, Romain; Mahé, Kelig; Chakroun-marzouk, Nadia.
Despite the high commercial value of the striped seabream Lithognathus mormyrus (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Gulf of Tunis, biological data on its age, growth and exploitation rate are lacking. With the aim of estimating growth parameters, 516 individuals, ranging from 6–27.5 cm total length and from 3.5–293.5 g total weight, were collected from the artisanal fishing fleet between February 2014 and July 2016. The somatic growth presented a positive allometry and was described by the equation TW = 6.54 10−3TL3.213. The monthly analysis of the marginal increment of the otoliths revealed that only one annulus was deposited per year. The estimated von Bertalanffy growth parameters were: L∞ = 30.18 cm, k = 0.303 year−1 and t0 = −1.42 years. Total and natural...

Age and Growth of Phycis Phycis (Linne, 1766) in the Gulf of Tunis ArchiMer
Romdhani, Ahlem; Chater, Ines; Ktari, Mohamed Hédi; Dufour, Jean-louis; Mahe, Kelig.
The age of fish in a population is fundamental to most of the questions fishery biologists attempt to answer about that population. The aim of this study was to report the parameters of the weight-length relationship and to estimate the age and growth of Phycis phycis (Linnaeus, 1766) in Gulf of Tunis. A sample of 272 specimens of P. phycis was collected from the landings of the small-scale artisanal fisheries between September 2007 and June 2010. The total length (TL) ranged from 14 to 55.5cm and total weight (TW) from 45 to 1779g. Length-weight relationship were described by allometrically positive for the females (TW = 0.0083*TL3. 0703), males (TW= 0.0063*TL3.1471), and both sexes (TW= 0.0082*TL3. 0759). No significant differences were found between...

Age, growth and mortality of Sciaena umbra (Sciaenidae) in the Gulf of Tunis ArchiMer
Chater, Ines; Romdhani-dhahri, Ahlem; Dufour, Jean-louis; Mahe, Kelig; Chakroun-marzouk, Nadia.
The growth and mortality of the brown meagre, Sciaena umbra from the Gulf of Tunis, were investigated using a sample of 276 specimens, ranging from 15.3 to 49.2 cm total length and from 43 to 1565 g total weight. Specimens were collected from artisanal fisheries between October 2008 and September 2011. Otoliths were extracted, thin cross-sections were realized and radii were measured. The log-linear morphometric relationships between total length-total weight and total length-otolith radius were significant (p < 0.05), showed positive allometry (b=3.15) and isometry (b=0.90), respectively. The marginal analysis suggested that only one growth increment was deposited per year. The maximum age of the brown meagre was 22 years for males and 31 years for...

Diet Composition and Feeding intensity of Brown Meagre Sciaena Umbra Linnaeus, 1758 (TELEOSTEI, SCIAENIDAE) in the Gulf of Tunis ArchiMer
Chater, Ines; Romdhani, Ahlem; Ktari, Mohamed Hédi; Mahe, Kelig.
Analysis of diet composition and feeding intensity of the brown meager (Sciaena umbra, Linnaeus, 1758) was realised seasonally and according to the fish size in the Central Mediterranean sea (Gulf of Tunis). Specimens were collected, monthly from October 2008 to September 2011 from the landings of the small-scale fisheries. In all, 272 stomachs of brown meagre measuring between 15.3 and 49.2cm total length (TL) were examined. The prey items identified in stomachs belong to six groups: Crustacea (Decapoda, Amphipoda, Isopoda, Mysidacea, Stomatopoda…), Annelida, Mollusca, Teleostei, Angiosperma and Algae. 118 stomachs were empty (43.4%). This percentage varied throughout the year. The lowest feeding intensity was recorded in summer during spawning period...

Otolith growth and age estimation of bastard grunt, Pomadasys incisus (Actinopterygii: Perciformes: Haemulidae), in the Gulf of Tunis (Central Mediterranean). ArchiMer
Chater, Ines; Romdhani, Ahlem; Dufour, Jean-louis; Mahe, Kelig; Francour, Patrice; Chakroun-marzouk, Nadia.
Background. Bastard grunt, Pomadasys incisus (Bowdich, 1825), is reported as a well-established species in the Mediterranean Sea. Although bastard grunt has rapidly expanded its area of distribution in the Mediterranean, there is no information about its age and growth. The aim of this study was to provide data about growth, condition, and first sexual maturity of the species in order to contribute to a better management of its fishery. Materials and methods. A total of 515 specimens of bastard grunt were caught in the Gulf of Tunis. The age was determined from otoliths. Length–weight relation, von Bertalanffy equation, and growth rate were employed to evaluate the fish growth. Also the condition factor and length at first sexual maturity were calculated....
