Late Quaternary planktic foraminifer fauna and monsoon upwelling records from the western South China Sea, near the Vietnam margin (IMAGES MD012394) ArchiMer
Yu, Pai-sen; Mii, Horng-sheng; Murayama, Masafumi; Chen, Min-te.
Marine sediment core MD012394 from the Vietnam coastal upwelling area in the western South China Sea was investigated in order to reconstruct the last Quaternary monsoon upwelling based on planktic foraminifer fauna assemblages and faUna-based sea surface temperature (SST) estimates. The age model of core MD012394 was constructed using oxygen isotope stratigraphy of the planktic foraminifer G. sacculifer, with 10 accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) 14 C dating of planktic foraminifers from the sediment samples. Our studies on the relative and absolute abundances of planktic foraminifer assemblages reveal eight dominant species in core MD012394: N. dutertrei + N. pachyderma (right coiling), G. ruber, G. glutinata, G. sacculifer, P obliquiloculata, G....

Slow warming of the northern South China Sea during the last deglaciation ArchiMer
Shintani, Tomoya; Yamamoto, Masanobu; Chen, Min-te.
We have generated a record of alkenone sea surface temperatures (SSTs) during the last 28000 years from Core MD97-2146 for the northern South China Sea (SCS). The SST record showed a typical pattern for change in the northern SCS SST. The SST during the LGM was similar to 25 degrees C, this decreased to similar to 24 degrees C to 17 ka, increased to similar to 25.5 degrees C to 14.5 ka, decreased again to similar to 24.5 degrees C to 11.8 ka, increased gradually to similar to 27 degrees C to 6 ka, and then increased more gradually to reach similar to 27.5 degrees C at present. The SST difference (Delta SSTNSCS = SSTMD97-2146 - SSTMD97-2141) between Cores MD97-2146 (the northern SCS; this study) and MD97-2141 (the Sulu Sea; Rosenthal et al. 2003) was used...

Elevated foraminifera-bound nitrogen isotopic composition during the last ice age in the South China Sea and its global and regional implications ArchiMer
Ren, Haojia; Sigman, Daniel M.; Chen, Min-te; Kao, Shuh-ji.
We report a new foraminifera-bound delta N-15 (FB-delta N-15) record from the South China Sea (SCS) extending back to 42 ka. This record shows a similar to 1.2 parts per thousand glacial-to-interglacial delta N-15 decrease, with a deglacial delta N-15 maximum similar to that observed in many bulk sedimentary delta N-15 records and in a Caribbean FB-delta N-15 record. The glacial-to-interglacial delta N-15 decrease is smaller than in the Caribbean record, indicating that at least half of the Caribbean delta N-15 decrease into the Holocene was regional, not global, supporting the interpretation of a Holocene increase in Atlantic nitrogen fixation. At the same time, the glacial-to-interglacial delta N-15 decrease observed in the SCS may also be explained as a...

Monsoon hydrography and productivity changes in the East China Sea during the past 100,000 years: Okinawa Trough evidence (MD012404) ArchiMer
Chang, Yuan-pin; Chen, Min-te; Yokoyama, Yusuke; Matsuzaki, Hiroyuki; Thompson, William G.; Kao, Shuh-ji; Kawahata, Hodaka.
We analyzed the high-resolution foraminifer isotope records, total organic carbon (TOC), and opal content from an Okinawa Trough core MD012404 in order to estimate the monsoon hydrography and productivity changes in the East China Sea (ECS) of the tropical western Pacific over the past 100,000 years. The variability shown in the records on orbital time scales indicates that high TOC intervals coincide with the increases of boreal May-September insolation driven by precession cycles (similar to 21 ka), implying a strong connection to the variations in monsoons. We also observed possibly nearly synchronous, millennial-scale changes of the ECS surface hydrography (mainly driven by salinity changes but also by temperature effects) and productivity coincident...

Reconstructing the southern South China Sea upper water column structure since the Last Glacial Maximum: Implications for the East Asian winter monsoon development ArchiMer
Steinke, Stephan; Mohtadi, Mahyar; Groeneveld, Jeroen; Lin, Li-chuan; Lowemark, Ludvig; Chen, Min-te; Rendle-buehring, Rebecca.
Upper water column dynamics in the southern South China Sea were reconstructed in order to track changes in the activity of the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) since the Last Glacial Maximum. We used the difference in the stable oxygen isotopes (Delta delta O-18) and Mg/Ca-based temperatures (Delta T) of surface-dwelling (G. ruber) and thermocline-dwelling (P. obliquiloculata) planktonic foraminifera and the temperature difference between alkenone- and P. obliquiloculata Mg/Ca-based temperatures to estimate the upper ocean thermal gradient at International Marine Past Global Change Study (IMAGES) core MD01-2390. Estimates of the upper ocean thermal gradient were used to reconstruct mixed layer dynamics. We find that our Delta delta O-18 estimates are...

Sea surface temperature, productivity, and terrestrial flux variations of the southeastern South China Sea over the past 800000 years (IMAGES MD972142) ArchiMer
Shiau, Liang-jian; Yu, Pai-sen; Wei, Kuo-yen; Yamamoto, Masanobu; Lee, Teh-quei; Yu, Ein-fen; Fang, Tien-hsi; Chen, Min-te.
Variations in sea surface temperature (SST), productivity, and biogenic components such as total organic carbon (TOC), carbonate, and opal contents measured from IMAGES (International Marine Global Changes Study) core MD972142 provide information about long-term paleoceanographic changes during the past similar to 870000 years in the southeastern South China Sea (SCS). MD972142 U-37(k)-SSTs varied from 25 to 29 degrees C, paralleling the glacial to interglacial changes. MD972142 biogenic components show relatively high carbonate and opal, and low TOC contents in interglacial stages, and low carbonate and opal and high TOC contents in glacial stages, and these variations appear to be sensitive to regional terrestrial sediment input and productivity. Our...

Millennial-scale planktic foraminifer faunal variability in the East China Sea during the past 40000 years (IMAGES MD012404 from the Okinawa Trough) ArchiMer
Chang, Yuan-pin; Wang, Wei-lung; Yokoyama, Yusuke; Matsuzaki, Hiroyuki; Kawahata, Hodaka; Chen, Min-te.
High resolution planktic foraminifer fauna assemblage data are used to reconstruct the millennial-scale sea surface temperature (SST) variability of the past 40000 years at an IMAGES core site (MD012404) in the Okinawa Trough in the East China Sea (ECS). The fauna assemblages in core MD012404 are dominated by five species - Globigerinoides ruber, Globigerina bulloides, Neogloboquadrina dutertrei, Pulleniatina obliquiloculata, and Globigerinita glutinata, which account for > 70% in relative abundance. Our Q-mode factor analysis decomposed the fauna abundance data into three factors, which indicate cold water mass, warm water mass, and possibly coastal water flow with low salinity in the ECS. The MD012404 fauna data show abrupt changes at similar to 16...
