Messung sekundärer Pflanzeninhaltsstoffe von Brokkoliblumen aus ökologischem Anbau Organic Eprints
Wolf, Stefanie; Fleck, Michael; Graeff-Hönninger, Simone; Zikeli, Sabine; Claupein, Wilhelm.
Today, consumer awareness on the healthiness of their foodstuff increases. The main focus is on secondary metabolites and antioxidants. Broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. convar. botrytis Alef. var. italica Plenck) has many compounds beneficial for human health, like Vitamin C, Carotionoids or Anthocyanins. To investigate these compounds two techniques are used in this study which are non-destructive sensor measurements (Multiplex®) to determine the value of anthocyanins (ANTH_RG) and flavonols (FLAV) and measurements of the antioxidant potential (water- (ACW) and lipid- (ACL) soluble antioxidants) on the basis of chemoluminescence. Field trials in autumn of 2011 and spring of 2012 were conducted in a randomized block design with different broccoli genotypes,...

Potential des Anbaus von Saflor (Carthamus tinctorius L.) unter den Bedingungen des Ökologischen Landbaus in Mitteleuropa Organic Eprints
Elfadl, Elfadl Yousif; Reinbrecht, Carsten; von Witzke-Ehbrecht, Sabine; Claupein, Wilhelm.
Under organic farming conditions, twenty safflower genotypes were tested for genotype-by-environment interaction (GxE) and stability across four locations in Germany and Switzerland for seed yield and oil content.. ANOVA showed highly significant differences among the genotypes, locations and GxL interactions for yield and oil content. None of the genotypes had a significant regression coefficient or a mean square deviation from the regression coefficient, thereby all genotypes are considered stable for seed yield, whereas, BS-62929 and PI-5724755 were relatively the most stable for oil content.

Pekrun, Carola; Claupein, Wilhelm.
In a field experiment started in August 1998 at the Experimental Station for Organic Farming Kleinhohenheim of the University of Hohenheim the effect of stubble tillage on yield formation and weed control was tested. Three types of stubble tillage were compared to a control which consisted of not cultivating the stubble after harvest. The treatments were: chiselling (15 cm), shallow ploughing (7 cm) and rototillering (5 cm). In autumn all treatments were ploughed at 25 cm depth. So far, stubble tillage has not had any significant effects on weeds or yields. However, there was a tendency of stubble tillage having an impact on perennial weeds.

Der Stoppelhobel – eine Alternative zu herkömmlichen Geräten der Stoppelbearbeitung im Ökologischen Landbau? Organic Eprints
Hunger, Stefan; Pekrun, Carola; Claupein, Wilhelm.
Before introduction of herbicides shallow ploughing was a widespread method of stubble tillage. In June 1999 25 trials on 7 organic farms were set up in South Germany. Three treatments of stubble tillage were compared: 1. “Stoppelhobel” (shallow ploughing); 2. “non inversion” stubble tillage (mostly chisel); 3. “control” (no stubble tillage). Results are shown for the first 16 months after initiating the experiments. In spring 2000 significant differences were assessed between the treatments “control” on one hand and “Stoppelhobel” and “non inversion” on the other with respect to perennial weeds. The same results were recorded on the stubble 2000. For annual weeds treatments never differed significantly. Yields showed no significant differences in most...

The implication of stubble tillage for weed population dynamics in organic farming Organic Eprints
Pekrun, Carola; Claupein, Wilhelm.
In practical farming early and shallow stubble tillage post-harvest is carried out to stimulate germination of freshly ripened crop and weed seeds, to kill the resulting seedlings and hence to reduce the input into the soil seedbank. Additionally, it aims at reducing perennial weeds by mechanical damage. In this paper field experiments and laboratory studies are presented which show that stubble tillage can reduce perennial weeds. However, it had a variable effect on annual weeds. After five years of experimentation, no effect of stubble tillage was seen when looking at the aboveground vegetation. In contrast, the soil seedbank of the control roughly doubled the seedbank of plots where stubble tillage had been carried out immediately after harvest. These...

Entwicklung samenfester Brokkoli-Genotypen (Brassica oleracea convar. Botrytis var. Italica): Vergleich physikalischer und sensorischer Merkmalsausprägungen Organic Eprints
Sahamishirazi, S.; Frank, N; Zikeli, Sabine; Fleck, Michael; Claupein, Wilhelm; Graeff-Hönninger, Simone.
This study compared physical and sensory quality traits of three breeding lines and one hybrid of organic broccoli to find suitable open pollinating variety with high potential for marketability. An Instron texture analyzer was used to measure the firmness of the texture. Descriptive and hedonic tests were done to assess sensory quality. The evaluation of the genotypes by the panelists showed a trend to rank the lines as “good” in respect to their sensory properties and their outer appearance. CHE-MIC-31 was the firmest open pollinating genotype. Results of this study showed that this breeding line has the potential for marketability because of it’s superior physical and sensory attributes.

Schrade, Sabine; Pekrun, Carola; Oechsner, Hans; Claupein, Wilhelm.

Gruber, Sabine; Häberle, Annette; Prade, Christoph; Stahr, Karl; Claupein, Wilhelm.
Water protection is controlled by specific regulations in the German Federal States, e.g. the SchALVO in Baden-Württemberg. An amendment of the SchALVO demands, amongst others, a changed timing and intensity of soil tillage directly after growing crops with high-nitrogen residues. As Organic Farming highly relies on soil tillage for weed control, there is concern about decrease of yield and increase of weed infesta-tion in water protection areas if tillage is restricted. Field experiments were performed on practical farms with three treatments according to SchALVO (rigid tine cultivator or mouldboard plough for primary tillage, used in October, December or February) and two treatments according to best management practice (mouldboard plough in Octo-ber or...

Reinbrecht, Carsten; Claupein, Wilhelm.

Open Pollinated Broccoli Genotypes: Agronomic Parameters and Sensory Attributes Organic Eprints
Wolf, Stefanie; Zikeli, Sabine; Fleck, Michael; Graeff-Hönninger, Simone; Claupein, Wilhelm.
Breeding of open pollinated (OP) varieties for organic farming gains further importance as varieties created by breeding techniques like CMS-hybridisation and cell fusion are no longer accepted by several organic farming associations. For broccoli (Brassica oleracea var. italica), the availability of OP varieties is very limited and the ones available are often not suitable for commercial crop production. In a participatory breeding project of the non-governmental, non-profit German association Kultursaat e.V. and the University of Hohenheim new genotypes were tested for agronomic parameters in field trials and sensory traits of cooked and raw broccoli were evaluated by two untrained consumer panels in 2012 and 2013. Agronomic traits of hybrids and OP...

The effect of stubble tillage and primary tillage on population dynamics of Canada Thistle (Cirsium arvense) in organic farming Organic Eprints
Pekrun, Carola; Claupein, Wilhelm.
Canada Thistle (Cirsium arvense) is a widespread weed in organic farming. It is difficult to control and in many farming enterprises there is a tendency of increase. Reduced frequency and intensity of tillage may be one reason for increasing problems. We studied the impact of stubble tillage and primary tillage on population-dynamics of C. arvense. In this paper results are presented of two field experiments at the ‘Experimental Station for Organic Farming Kleinhohenheim’, one field experiment on ‘Goldener Acker’ at Hohenheim and 19 experiments on organic farms south of Stuttgart. The experiments were carried out between 1998 and 2003. Results show that inversion in autumn or winter is vital for the control of C. arvense. In an experiment testing various...

Screening von Senf-Genotypen zur Körnernutzung im ökologischen Anbau in Mitteleuropa Organic Eprints
Gruber, Sabine; Apukyia, Samuel; Zikeli, Sabine; Claupein, Wilhelm.
Information is rare about mustard (Sinapis alba, Brassica nigra, B. juncea) varieties and their characteristics for a suitable performance under organic conditions. 30 accessions were grown at the organic Research Station Kleinhohenheim in SW Germany in the year 2011. Highest grain yield was obtained by S. alba (10.5 g/plant) which was about four times the yield of B. nigra, and ten times the yield of B. juncea, mainly because of higher thousand kernel mass and high number of pods. B nigra and B. juncea were heavily damaged by pests so that only S. alba seems a suitable mustard species for German organic farming at the moment.

Gruber, Sabine; Claupein, Wilhelm.
A long-term experiment at the Experimental Station for Organic Farming Kleinhohenheim should determine effects of stubble tillage on weed density and weed communities. The treatments were stubble tillage by a chisel plough (10 cm), a modified skimmer plough (7 cm), a rotary hoe (5 cm) and a control, previous to primary tillage by a mouldboard plough in autumn. The results presented here refer to the weed density of dicotyledonous-annual plants, monocotyledonous plants and lucerne volunteers in the years 8 and 9 of the experiment, i.e. the first two years after perennial lucerne grass. There were no significant differences found between the treatments for weeds, volunteers and crop yield of winter wheat and oats. These results confirm and continue...

Entwicklung von Anbausystemen für Linsen im ökologischen Landbau Organic Eprints
Gruber, Sabine; Wang, Lina; Zikeli, Sabine; Mammel, Woldemar; Claupein, Wilhelm.
After commercial cropping of lentils (Lens culinaris) expired in Germany 50 years ago, a revival was observed on a small regional scale. Several field trials aimed at the development of lentil cropping systems to make lentils a more popular crop in German organic farming. One of the trials was set up to identify suitable companion crops and cropping ratios for lentils in mixed cropping systems. Suitable cropping systems in terms of yield (up to 1.8 t ha-1) were combinations with barley (Hordeum vulgare), wheat (Triticum aestivum) and buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) in a ratio of 180 : 60 seeds ha-1 (lentil:companion crop), and with wheat or oats (Avena sativa, 1 : 3) in terms of lodging. As lentil and wheat grains were difficult to separate after harvest,...

Wolf, Stefanie; Zikeli, Sabine; Graeff-Hönninger, Simone; Claupein, Wilhelm.

Pekrun, Carola; Claupein, Wilhelm.
