To date meiobenthic research remained a big white spot in the systematic-ecological work on Antarctic zoobenthos. Therefore the relative importance of the meiofauna (organisms within the size range of 38-1000µm) in the Antarctic benthic community has been assessed by a combined field ecology and experimental approach. This was done in two contrasting conditions, e.g. the deep sea and low subtidal, where as to the depth of the water column the benthic characteristics were, respectively, indirectly or directly related to primary production. Deep-sea samples were collected at Kapp Norvegia and Halley Bay (Weddell Sea) during the EPOS-leg 3-campaign (summer 1989) with the RV Polarstern at depths between 200 and 2000 m. Samples for the ecological-experimental... |

Tridentulus n. gen. is described from Isla Floreana, the Galápagos and its type and only species Tridentulus floreanae (Eyualem & Coomans, 1995) n. comb. redescribed. Tridentulus n. gen., comes close to the genera Monhystera Bastian, 1865, Eumonhystera Andrássy, 1981 and Sinanema Andrássy, 1960, but differs from all of them in a combination of two characteristics i.e. in having three small denticles situated posteriorly at the base of the stoma and an outstretched female reproductive system. The taxonomic position of the genus Sinanema is also questioned. |

Echinoderes higginsi sp.n. is described from shallow subtidal sand north of the mouth of the Westerscheldt estuary, The Netherlands. The species is compared with other species having the same spine formulac. It appears to be most closely related to E. kristenseni Higgins. 1983 and, to a lesscr extent. to E. riedli Higgins, 1966. Condyldres multispinosus (McIntyre. 1962) is reported from the same locality, the first report of this centroderid kinorhynch since the original description. Some additional information on E. levunderi Karling, 1954 is presented. The presence of lateroventral adhesive tubes on the fourth segment, lateral spines on segment 7 and small additional setae on segment 12 in the male is noted. Echinoderes canariensis Greeff, 1869 and E.... |

Daptonema williamsi sp.n. from the Ombo river, New Georgia, is described and figured in detail. The species shows some interesting morphological characters, mainly in the reproductive system, e.g. an hitherto undescribed protraction and rotation system of the spicules, matching a posteriorly directed vagina. D. williamsi closely resembles D. normandicum (de Man, 1890), D. oxycerca (de Man, 1888) and D. tenuispiculum (Ditlevsen, 1918). The first of these species has shorter spicules, longer setae on the male tail, only 3–4 ejaculatory glands and a vagina perpendicular to the body wall. D. oxycerca and D.... |

Soil samples from a nature reserve for indigenous animals in Uruguay yielded one new and two known Xiphodorus species and one new Paraxiphidorus species. The new Xiphidorus is described as X. uruguayensis n. sp. It can be distinguished from other Xiphidorus species by its large body size, cylindrical anterior end offset from the remainder of the body by a sudden expansion of the latter and by its barrel- to heart-shaped amphid with small slit-like aperture. The other species found were X. balcarceanus Chaves & Coomans, 1984 and X. minor Rashid, Coomans & Sharma, 1986. The new Paraxiphidorus species,... |
