A range of studies have compared the level of nutritionally relevant compounds in crops from organic and nonorganic farming systems, but there is very limited information on the effect of farming systems and their key components on the protein composition of plants. We addressed this gap by quantifying the effects of different farming systems and key components of such systems on the protein profiles of potato tubers. QLIF researchers have collected data on the environmental and economic impact of a series of production measures. This will be the basis for this workshop which aims to analyse the efficiency of organic and low-input systems concerning the use of land, nutrients, water energy, and climate change scenarios. Maintaining sufficient soil phosphorus (P) levels for non-limiting crop growth is challenging in organic systems since off-farm inputs of P are restricted. This study assessed the status of P on organic farms in Europe using soil test results for extractable P. Data was obtained from published literature, unpublished theses, and various national and regional databases of soil test values. Most of the data (15,506 observations) came from field scale soil tests, but in some cases (1272 observations) values had been averaged across a farm. Conservation agriculture and organic farming are considered as promising sustainable agricultural system for producing food, while minimizing environmental impacts. Despite an increasing number of experimental data on organic conservation practices and various studies dealing with the adoption of conservation agriculture by farmers, none of those studies have specifically addressed conservation agriculture adoption under organic conditions in Europe. Conservation tillage in organic farming combines the principles of organic farming with the benefits of soil erosion control achieved by the conversion from ploughing to either reduced tillage or no-tillage/direct-seeding. This chapter reviews more than two decades of on-station and on-farm research. The chapter outlines the main benefits of conservation tillage before considering its main challenges. The chapter also contains a number of specific case studies from the field. Finally, the chapter looks ahead to future research trends in this area and offers detailed guidance on where to find further information about this subject. |

The interest of organic farmers for adopting conservation agriculture practices is currently growing. Due to the overlap of many disciplines and the availability of novel technologies, modern agriculture has become a wide, interdisciplinary endeavor, especially in Precision Agriculture. The adoption of a standard format for reporting field experiments can help researchers to focus on the data rather than on re-formatting and understanding the structure of the data. Organic farming standards regulate allowable nutrient inputs according to the core principles of: reliance on renewable resources, recycling of wastes and by-products of plant and animal origin, and feeding of plants through the soil ecosystem and not through soluble fertilizers, balanced against a goal to produce high quality products with a minimum level of contaminants. A large amount of results on optimising organic and low-input production of crops for commodities such as wheat, apples, tomatoes and lettuce have been generated. However, the gap between the productivity of organic and conventional production systems persists as one of the main issues. Organic farming systems need to replace nutrients exported via farm products, especially phosphorus (P) which may otherwise become depleted in soil in the long term. In Europe, EU regulations for organic production are shaping the farming systems with respect to inputs of nutrients. Permitted off-farm P sources include conventional animal manure, composted or anaerobically digested organic residues, rock phosphate, and some animal residues such as meat and bone meal. No Till and Reduced Till are conservation tillage practices with a high potential to restore or improve essential soil functions and mitigate climate change through carbon sequestration and reduced fuel use. Reduced tillage is increasingly promoted to improve sustainability and productivity of agricultural systems. Nonetheless, adoption of reduced tillage by organic farmers has been slow due to concerns about nutrient supply, soil structure, and weeds that may limit yields. The loss of phosphorus in exported products is a concern for all organic producers. The team of CORE Organic Project "Improve-P" assess attitudes to alternative phosphorus fertilisers among organic stakeholders. This paper reports on results collected via a questionnaire at the National Soil Symposium in Solihull, UK November 2014. 58 respondents showed a large interest in recycled P fertilisers, e.g. derived from human urine.
