| Readers of our first CHARM I atlas will know that almost everything contained within the atlas was original work resulting from two years of intensive study of the Dover Strait by a dedicated and inter- disciplinary team working from bases on either side of the Channel. The present atlas has carried on this eminent precedent, though this time covering the whole of the eastern English Channel (figure 1) and widening considerably the thematic scope. | Depuis une vingtaine d'années, l'Ifremer organise des campagnes de pêche scientifique en mer du Nord, Manche, Atlantique et Méditerranée concernant les ressources pélagiques, démersales et benthiques. L'objectif prioritaire est de produire des indices d'abondance des principales espèces commerciales. Elles recueillent également des données sur les espèces capturées non commerciales. Les campagnes sont réalisées selon des plans d'échantillonnage standardisés. L'engin de pêche et son gréement, la position des stations, le tri des captures, les prélèvements biologiques suivent des protocoles fixés. | This report is the 19th annual surveillance of the nuclear plant site of Gravelines. Low temperatures are observed in january (water t° = 0°20 in entrance) and high in Automne. Chlorination was stopped three months and half only. Bromoform mean value is 24,4 ug.l-1 . Vibrio variations are linked with fish farm increasing. In April chlorophyll maximum is 18 mg In-3 . Zooplanktonic succession and biomass are usual. Earlyness in sole and spart reproduction was noticeable. Spionidae distribution is linked to nuclear effluent on interdidal zone. | Biological information is necessary for population structure assessment of economically important species. There are no known published studies on the age and reproduction of Mullus surmuletus in the north of the Bay of Biscay. The aim of this study was to estimate growth and reproductive biology of this species in the eastern English Channel and southern North Sea from 1089 individuals, observed from February to December 2004. The length–weight relationship was described by the parameters: a = 3.284.10−6 and b = 3.243, being allometrically positive. | The English Channel cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) is the most abundant cephalopod resource in the Northeast Atlantic and one of the three most valuable resources for English Channel fishers. Depletion methods and age-structured models have been used to assess the stock, though they have shown limitations related to the model assumptions and data demand. A two-stage biomass model is, therefore, proposed here using, as input data, four abundance indices derived from survey and commercial trawl data collected by Ifremer and Cefas. | We present a method for combining individual indicator results into a comprehensive diagnostic of fishing impacts on fish populations and communities. A conceptual framework for interpreting combined trends in a set of simple indicators is proposed, relying beforehand on qualitative expectations anchored in ecological theory. The initial state of the community is first assessed using published information. Which combinations of trends are acceptable or undesirable is decided, depending on the initial status. | Striped red mullet Mullus surmuletus L. 1758 is an economically important species in the Mediterranean Sea and in the northern Atlantic Ocean, where it is exploited from the Bay of Biscay to the southern North Sea (ICES, 2010). | The results of a survey on fishers' perceptions of recent changes in the eastern English Channel ecosystem carried out in 2006 were compared with fishery and bottom-trawl survey data. A hypothesis-testing framework was used, testing the null hypothesis that fishers' statements were true, which permitted evaluation of both agreement and disagreement. Overall good agreement between fishers' statements and scientific data was found, and both sources suggested that the fish community in the Channel is undergoing large changes, among which are decreases in some commercially important species; in addition, a number of human pressures impact the ecosystem.
