The European and Mediterranean species of Aglaophenia (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa) Naturalis
Svoboda, A.; Cornelius, P.F.S..
The eleven species of the hydroid genus Aglaophenia Lamouroux, 1812, recorded from European and Mediterranean waters are redescribed in detail and aspects of their biology discussed. A section on the identification of the European and Mediterranean species and a comprehensive glossary are included. Comments are given on type specimens, reproduction, ecology and distribution and, briefly, on other biological aspects. Certain of the species occur further north than previously realized. A. acacia Allman, 1883 and A. parvula Bale, 1882, are newly recorded from British waters, the latter being almost new to Europe. It differs only minutely from the widely-known A. pluma. A. kirchenpaueri (Heller, 1868) is added to the Irish faunal list, and has only recently...

The hydrozoan work of Prof. Wim Vervoort Naturalis
Cornelius, P.F.S..
The merits of Prof. Wim Vervoort in the field of hydrozoan taxonomy are evaluated. His solid scientific approach, productivity, encyclopedic knowledge, modesty and other virtues are noted. Thanks to his work and efforts, the Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum at Leiden now accommodates by far the most important modern collection of hydroids in the world.

Taxonomic characters from the hydranths of live thecate hydroids: European Haleciidae (Cnidaria: Leptothecatae) Naturalis
Cornelius, P.F.S..
The hydranths of six species of hydroids of the family Haleciidae from NW Europe are described from life and compared. Notes are given on the hydranths of three other species, and general taxonomic comments on some others. Hydranth character-states are useful in defining and distinguishing Halecium species, but the characters may not be useful in routine identification by non-specialists. Halecium undulatum is recorded for the first time from Sweden, and from three localities in Norway whence there was just one previous record. Halecium halecinum may breed year-round in British waters.

On the name of the hermit-crab anemone, Adamsia palliata (O.F. Müller, 1776) Naturalis
Cornelius, P.F.S.; Ates, R.M.L..
The long-used scientific name of the common European sea-enemone Adamsia palliata should be retained in use and an unfamiliar name used in some recent synoptic works should be abandoned. We show this to be so under the Code of Zoological Nomenclature and also on pragmatic grounds.
