Dietary lipid level affects fatty acid composition and hydrolase activities of intestinal brush border membrane in seabass ArchiMer

Triplicate groups of juvenile seabass (initial weight of 241 g) were fed during 13 weeks three isonitrogenous experimental diets containing different lipid levels, 12% (LL group), 21% (ML group) and 30% (HL group). At the end of the experiment, fish weight gain was similar among the 3 dietary groups. Intestinal brush border membranes were purified for each dietary group; one part of the brush border fraction was dedicated to enzyme assays, the remaining fraction being used for lipid extraction followed by fatty acid analysis. The fatty acid composition of the brush border membrane differed among the 3 groups, although the 3 experimental diets had the same fatty acid composition. For sustainable aquaculture, the removal of marine resource ingredients in fish diets is an important objective. While most studies focus on the replacement of fish oil by vegetable oil, little is known on the nutritional effects of presence (which corresponds to the control diet) or absence of dietary fish oil. We studied fatty acid composition of brush-border membranes and digestive enzyme activities of the intestine and measured the expression and activities of several enzymes involved in the hepatic intermediary metabolism of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fed for 7 weeks with or without fish oil. Differential gene expression after total replacement of dietary fish meal and fish oil by plant products in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) liver ArchiMer

Our objective was to analyse the hepatic transcriptomes of juvenile rainbow trout fed with a plant-based diet. We focused our analysis on the total replacement of fish meal (FM) and fish oil (FO) by a 100% plant-based diet (0% FM, 0% FO). We analysed the postprandial hepatic transcriptomes of rainbow trout fed the two diets 8 h after feeding. Six total hepatic RNAs from each dietary group were hybridised against a trout cDNA microarray (9K). Response of common carp (Cyprinus carpio) larvae to different dietary levels and forms of supply of medium-chain fatty acids ArchiMer

The effects of dietary medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA) on survival, growth and fatty acid composition of first-feeding carp larvae were investigated in two 21-day feeding trials. In trial 1, one diet CO was supplemented with 10% coconut oil, two diets, M1 and M2 with 1.7 or 4.2% interesterified medium-chain triacylglycerols (MCT), and two other diets T1 and T2 with 1% tricaprylin and 0.7% tricaprin, or 2.5% tricaprylin and 1.7% tricaprin. Regulation of feed intake, growth, nutrient and energy utilisation in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) fed high fat diets ArchiMer

Three practical isoproteic (54% protein) diets were formulated to contain graded levels of crude fat (diet L: 10%, diet M: 20% and diet H: 30%). Each diet was assigned unrestrictedly to three and restrictedly to two replicate groups of fish (IBW 243 g). In unrestricted groups, increasing the dietary lipid level led to a significant decrease in voluntary feed intake without affecting growth rate. In the feed-restricted groups, daily growth rates increased with increasing dietary fat levels. Effect of genistein-enriched diets on the endocrine process of gametogenesis and on reproduction efficiency of the rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss ArchiMer

Three practical diets were formulated to contain 0, 500, or 1000 ppm genistein. The three diets were distributed for 1 year to groups of rainbow trout undergoing their first gametogenesis and until spawning. Growth performance of rainbow trout was not affected by dietary treatments. Plasma cholesterol levels were equivalent between groups. In males, a slight but constant induction of vitellogenin (VTG) synthesis and a decrease in testosterone levels were observed. A slight decrease in plasma levels of beta FSH and beta LH was noticed at the end of spermatogenesis in the male fish fed a diet with 500 ppm (genistein) (from 2.16 +/- 0.39 to 1.47 +/- 0.23 for beta FSH and from 0.44 +/- 0.09 to 0.31 +/- 0.09 for beta LH). Does broodstock nutritional history affect the response of progeny to different first-feeding diets? A whole-body transcriptomic study of rainbow trout alevins ArchiMer

The whole-body transcriptome of trout alevins was characterised to investigate the effects of long-term feeding of rainbow trout broodstock females a diet free of fishmeal and fish oil on the metabolic capacities of progeny. Effects were studied before first feeding and after 3 weeks of feeding diets containing different proportions of marine and plant ingredients. Feeding alevins plant-based diets resulted in lower fish body weight, irrespective of maternal nutritional history. No differences in whole-body lipids were found between treatments, and the tissue fatty acid profile strongly reflected that of the respective broodstock or first-feeding diets.
