An Interactive Decision Model Integrating Broiler Production and Processing Responsiveness to Consumer and Producer Prices AgEcon
Costa, Ecio de Farias; Houston, Jack E..
In the vertically integrated poultry industry, profit maximization for broiler integrators must incorporate feed formulation, broiler production, and broiler processing operations to determine optimally sized birds for the most profitable market segments. Here, substituting cottonseed meal (CSM) for soybean meal (SBM) in broiler feed is evaluated under changing input and product market conditions, where there are two processing options – whole carcass vs. cut-up parts. For the prices analyzed, CSM-fed broilers earn higher profits for whole carcass processing, while SBM-fed broilers earn higher returns for cut-up parts processing. Optimal protein levels used in the feed processes exceed currently recommended levels.

PARTS OR WHOLE? EFFICIENT BROILER PRODUCTION RESPONSES TO CONSUMER-DRIVEN MARKETS AgEcon
Costa, Ecio de Farias; Houston, Jack E.; Gunter, Lewell F.; Pesti, Gene M..
Adoption of consumer-market-oriented production on broiler profit-maximizing modeling generates results that differ from those traditionally used in profit maximization for broiler production. This model shows that the adoption of step-pricing and marketing options (examples of consumer-market-oriented decisions) modify the optimal levels and types of broiler production to generate maximum profitability. Thus optimal protein levels in the feed formulated exceed currently recommended levels and alternative protein sources are also allocated. The adoption of step-pricing to respond to consumer-market-oriented decisions shows that higher profits can be obtained for targeted weights only if premium prices for output are allocated.

With an exploratory character, this...

PRICE RISK MANAGEMENT FOR PEANUT MEAL AgEcon
Costa, Ecio de Farias; Turner, Steven C..
Peanut meal is cross-hedged with soybean meal using peanut meal cash prices and soybean meal futures prices. Hedge rations are obtained for short- vs. long-term data sets. Evaluation indicates positive gains for cross-hedged poultry/peanut producers, and that soybean meal futures can be used as a cross-hedging vehicle for peanut meal.

EVOLUÇÃO E CARACTERIZAÇÃO DOS NÍVEIS DE POBREZA DO NORDESTE ENTRE 1995 E 2005. AgEcon

INCORPORATING CONSUMER DEMAND IN BROILER PROFIT-MAXIMIZATION MODELING AgEcon
Costa, Ecio de Farias; Houston, Jack E.; Gunter, Lewell F.; Pesti, Gene M..
Increased emphasis on consumer markets in broiler profit-maximizing modeling generates results that differ from those of traditional profit-maximization models. This approach reveals that the adoption of step-pricing and consideration of marketing options (examples of responsiveness to consumers) affect the optimal feed-formulation levels and types of broiler production to generate maximum profitability. With the adoption of step-pricing, higher profits can be obtained for targeted weights only if premium prices for broiler products are contracted.

IMPACTS OF ADVERTISING AND PROMOTION ON THE DEMAND FOR SCANNED PURCHASES OF VIDALIA ONIONS AgEcon
Costa, Ecio de Farias; Epperson, James E.; Huang, Chung L.; McKissick, John C..
This study evaluates the promotion and advertising impacts on the demand for scanned purchases of Vidalia onions and estimates returns to promotion expenditures. The analysis uses supermarket scanner data collected from scanned purchases of Vidalia onions and promotion expenditures generated by the Vidalia Onion Marketing Order. An error-components model is estimated to determine the impacts of promotion expenditures for scanned purchases of Vidalia onions, own price, prices of substitutes and complements, demographics, and seasonal variables for 10 different markets over a 260-week period from 1996 to 2001.

Impactos socioeconômicos do cultivo de camarão marinho em municípios selecionados do Nordeste brasileiro AgEcon
Sampaio, Yony; Costa, Ecio de Farias; Albuquerque, Erica; Sampaio, Breno Ramos.
This paper analyses the impact of farmed shrimp on the economy of ten municipalities in the Northeast of Brazil. A model of the municipal economy is developed and input-output tables are used to estimate indirect and induced impacts on job, income and municipal finances. It is concluded that farmed shrimp has a sizable contribution to job increases, in particular formal employment. Indirect and induced impacts are reduced because of spillovers to larger municipalities and other states. Income impacts can be sizable in particular in small counties. In general, the generated income represents a large share of total municipal product. In relation to municipal finance, direct contribution is rather small but indirect, through product increases and mainly...

SIMULAÇÃO DO REFLORESTAMENTO CILIAR DO RIO MUNDAÚ-AL COM BENEFÍCIO GERADO PELA VENDA DE CRÉDITOS DE CARBONO: UMA ANÁLISE DE VIABILIDADE ATRAVÉS DE MODELO INTERATIVO AgEcon

CROSS-HEDGING COTTONSEED MEAL AgEcon
Rahman, Shaikh Mahfuzur; Turner, Steven C.; Costa, Ecio de Farias.
This study examines the feasibility of cross-hedging cottonseed meal with soybean meal futures. A simple linear regression of cottonseed meal cash prices on soybean meal futures provides a direct price movement relationship. Using the estimated hedge ratios, the net realized prices are calculated for seven different cash markets. The net realized prices are higher than cash prices in three of the four years evaluated. The empirical analyses suggest soybean meal futures can be used as a potential cross-hedging vehicle for cash cottonseed meal.

BRAZIL'S NEW FLOATING EXCHANGE RATE REGIME AND COMPETITIVENESS IN THE WORLD POULTRY MARKET AgEcon
Costa, Ecio de Farias.
In early 1999, Brazil devalued its currency, increasing its competitiveness in the poultry industry and capturing world market share. This paper discusses the devaluation and its effects on Brazil's trade, evaluates preliminary statistics on the impact of the devaluation on world poultry markets, and reports the results from a computable general equilibrium (CGE) simulation of the devaluation. The medium-run CGE results are compared to the short-run impacts reflected in the preliminary statistics.

PRODUCTION AND PROFITABILITY RESPONSES TO ALTERNATIVE PROTEIN SOURCES AND LEVELS IN BROILER RATIONS AgEcon
Costa, Ecio de Farias; Miller, Bill R.; Houston, Jack E.; Pesti, Gene M..
Profitability of using alternative protein sources in broiler feed is investigated through the development of a two-stage mathematical program that optimizes broiler production. A case study of peanut meal vs. soybean meal is examined. Value of marginal product concepts incorporated in this method permit analysis of demand adjustments before decisions on the production process occur. Given reported input and output prices, results indicate that soybean meal is generally more profitable than peanut meal. Peanut meal can be more profitable at higher dietary protein levels fed to broilers processed into whole carcass or at relatively higher prices for soybean meal.

CRÉDITO RURAL E INADIMPLÊNCIA NA FRUTICULTURA IRRIGADA DO PÓLO PETROLINA-JUAZEIRO AgEcon

WHO ARE THE CONSUMERS OF VIDALIA ONIONS? AgEcon
Costa, Ecio de Farias; Wolfe, Kent; Epperson, James E.; Huang, Chung L.; McKissick, John C..
This study presents results of a telephone survey that was administered to primary food shoppers who had consumed Vidalia onions in the past. The survey samples were distributed according to the amount of Vidalia onions shipped to five different regions in the United States and weighed by the U.S. Census. Results indicate that Vidalia onions are the preferred sweet onion among consumers interviewed, that at-home consumption is highest, and that the quality of Vidalia onions remains high among the sample interviewed. Very little advertising was recalled, but in-store advertising was mentioned as the most effective.
