Description of the larva of Alampoides alychnus (Kirsch, 1873), the first known species with bioluminescent immatures in Euplinthini (Elateridae, Agrypninae) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Rosa,Simone Policena; Costa,Cleide.
Mature larva of Alampoides alychnus (Kirsch) is described and compared to known Pyrophorini immatures. Larvae were collected live in the soil of a region dominated by sugarcane plantation and gallery forest in Campo Novo dos Parecis, Mato Grosso, Brazil. They were maintained in laboratory and the pupal period lasted 14 days. This larva differs from other Pyrophorini larvae mainly by bioluminescent pattern: one pair of luminous spots on the mesonotum, and a longitudinal series of median spots on the metanotum and all abdominal segments. The morphology of larva and the bioluminescent pattern of larva and pupa are described for the first time to the genus and the tribe. The fact that adults show no trace of luminescence is emphasized.

New data on the natural history and description of the immatures of Fulgeochlizus bruchi, a bioluminescent beetle from Central Brazil (Elateridae, Pyrophorini) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Rosa,Simone Policena; Costa,Cleide; Higashi,Neide.
The mature larva and pupa of Fulgeochlizus bruchi (Candèze, 1896) are described and illustrated. Bioluminescent patterns are also given. Comments, new data on the first instar larva and natural history data are presented. The first instar larvae differ from the mature larvae mainly in their chaetotaxy, which is sparse and more symmetrically distributed.

Metapyrophorus pharolim a new genus and species of Pyrophorini (Coleoptera, Elateridae, Agrypninae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Rosa,Simone Policena; Costa,Cleide.
Metapyrophorus, a new monotypic genus, is erected based on M. pharolim, new species from Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela. The genus is characterized mainly by its pair of convex pronotal bioluminescent organs, equidistant between the median line and the lateral margin.

On the concepts of "pre-pupa", with special reference to the Coleoptera Zoologia
Costa,Cleide; Vanin,Sergio A..
Three main concepts of "pre-pupa" are recognized here in the Holometabola: i) pre-pupa without a distinct moult but with a short quiescent period followed or not by slight modifications of the last larval instar form of body - this type corresponds to the pharate pupa; ii) pre-pupa with a distinct moult, and a quiescent resting period followed by slight form modifications (mainly in the mandibles and color pattern) with a variable period of diapause (ex. Hymenoptera-Symphyta); iii) pre-pupa with a distinct moult, a quiescent period not related to the diapause phenomenon, and distinct morphological modifications (Coleoptera-Mycteridae).

Description of larva and pupa of Paracalais prosectus (Candèze) (Elateridae, Agrypninae, Hemirhipini) Zoologia
Casari,Sônia A; Costa,Cleide.
Larva and pupa of Paracalais prosectus (Candèze, 1857) from Eastern Australia are described and illustrated. Larvae were collected under bark of decayed log of Pinus ellioti, together with Cerambycidae larva. Up to now, only the larva of Paracalis gibboni (Newman, 1857) was described.
