Abstract: Human-modified landscapes (HMLs) are composed by small, isolated and defaunated forest fragments, which are surrounded by agricultural and urban areas. Information on species that thrives in these HMLs is essential to direct conservation strategies in local and regional scales. Since HMLs are dominant in the Atlantic Forest, we aimed to assess the mammalian diversity in a HML in southeastern Brazil and to propose conservation strategies. We collected data of terrestrial (small-, medium- and large-sized) and volant mammals in three small forest fragments (10, 14 and 26 ha) and adjacent areas, between 2003 and 2016, using complementary methods: active search, camera trapping, live-traps, mist nets and occasional records (i.e., roadkills). ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to investigate exposure of Baixadeiro horses to Rickettsia spp. and to ticks infected by Rickettsia in the Baixada Maranhense (lowlands) micro-region, state of Maranhão. A total of 258 horses were tested for Rickettsia rickettsii, Rickettsia amblyommatis and Rickettsia bellii using the immunofluorescence assay (IFA). Overall, 58.91% (152/258) of the horses were seroreactive for at least one Rickettsia species, and 85.27% of the horses were infested with one or more species of tick, which were identified as Dermacentor nitens (93.63%), Amblyomma cajennense sensu stricto (4.55%) and Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (1.82%). These ticks were subjected to DNA extraction and were tested using the polymerase chain reaction... |

ABSTRACT: From May to September 2011, a total of 138 wild rodents of the Cricetidae family were collected in the cities of Anhembi, Bofete and Torre de Pedra, in São Paulo State. All animals were examined for the presence of ticks, which were collected and identified at species level in the laboratory by morphological examination (for adults, nymphs and larvae) and molecular biology, by sequencing of a fragment of the 16S mitochondrial rDNA (for larvae). A total of 47 ticks (21 larvae and 26 nymphs) were collected from rodents, identified as 21 larvae and 23 nymphs of Amblyomma ovale (collected on Oligoryzomys nigripes , Oligoryzomys flavescens , Sooretamys agouya and Nectomys squamipes ), two nymphs of Ixodes schulzei (O. nigripes and O. flavescens ) and... |
