L'organisation hydrobiologique d'un bassin paralique de type bahira : la baie de Kalloni (Lesbos, Grèce) ArchiMer
Lefebvre, A; Guelorget, O; Perthuisot, Jp; Courties, C; Millet, B.
The deep, elongated paralic basin of Kalloni bay has been studied through comparisons between several computed hydrodynamical situations and data collected in similar situations from its water body. These include salinities and phytoplanktonic biomasses. Additionally, sedimentological data, which integrate the environmental variations on the long term, have been collected in order to help in understanding the average biogeological functioning of the system. Depending upon its direction and speed, wind forcing induces different salinity and phytoplanktonic patterns. These generally display rather weak gradients from the entrance and the axial deepest channel towards the farthest northeastern reaches of the basin. Moreover, the ranges of salinities and...

Size-fractionated phytoplankton carboxylase activities in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean ArchiMer
Fouilland, E; Courties, C; Descolas-gros, C.
During the ANTARES 3 cruise in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean in October-November 1995, the surface waters of Kerguelen Islands plume, and the surface and deeper waters (30-60 m) along a transect on 62 degrees E from 48 degrees 36'8 to the ice edge (58 degrees 50'S), were sampled. The phytoplankton community was size-fractionated (2 mu m) and cell numbers, chlorophyll biomass and carbon assimilation, through Rubisco and beta-carboxylase activities, were characterized. The highest contribution of <2 mu m cells to total biomass and total Rubisco activity was reported in the waters of the Permanent Open Ocean Zone (POOZ) located between 52 degrees S and 55 degrees S along 62 degrees E. In this zone, the picophytoplankton contributed from 26 to 50%...

Dynamique du copepode Eurytemora hirundoides dans l'estuaire de la Gironde: Effet de la temperature ArchiMer
Castel, J; Courties, C; Poli, J M.
The seasonal pattern of the abundance of the planktonic copepod Eurytemora hirundoides shows the highest numbers are associated with temperatures between 10 and 20 degree C. However, for this temperature range, the abundance is higher in spring than in autumn. The evolution of the intrinsic rate of increase (r sub(m), determined in laboratory), as a function of the evironmental temperature, predicts a peak abundance at the end of May which is consistent with observations. The decrease of r sub(m) occurring from 18 degree C cannot be the only explanation for the decline of the summer population. Other factors are involved: oxygen tension, competition. Two types of action of the temperature, direct in spring, indirect in summer, must be taken into account to...

The effects of a strong winter storm on physical and biological variables at a shelf site in the Mediterranean ArchiMer
Gremare, A; Amouroux, Jm; Cauwet, G; Charles, F; Courties, C; De Bovee, F; Dinet, A; Devenon, Jean-luc; Durrieu De Madron, X; Ferre, B; Fraunie, P; Joux, F; Lantoine, F; Lebaron, P; Naudin, Jj; Palanques, A; Pujo-pay, M; Zudaire, L.
A survey involving both permanent mooring and high frequency sampling was carried in the Bay of Banyuls-sur-Mer during the fall of 1999 to assess the effect of strong and unpredictable meteorological events on the functioning of a coastal Mediterranean ecosystem. A severe winter storm took place on 12 November, which generated waves with a significant height of 7 m and a sea surface rise of about 0.5 m. The near-bottom current speed at 24 m reached 30 cm s(-1). This storm induced a significant increase in total suspended matter through resuspension and then a subsequent increase in gross sedimentation rates. It also resulted in an increase of the proportion of refractory particulate organic matter in the water column. It also tended to increase nutrient...
