Development of a 2-way coupled ocean-wave model: assessment on aglobal NEMO(v3.6)-WW3(v6.02) coupled configuration ArchiMer
Couvelard, Xavier; Lemarié, Florian; Samson, Guillaume; Redelsperger, Jean-luc; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Benshila, Rachid; Madec, Gurvan.
This paper describes the implementation of a coupling between a three-dimensional ocean general circulation model (NEMO) and a wave model (WW3) to represent the interactions of the upper oceanic flow dynamics with surface waves. The focus is on the impact of such coupling on upper-ocean properties (temperature and currents) and mixed-layer depths (MLD) at global eddying scales. A generic coupling interface has been developed and the NEMO governing equations and boundary conditions have been adapted to include wave-induced terms following the approach of McWilliams et al. (2004) and Ardhuin et al. (2008). In particular, the contributions of Stokes-Coriolis, Vortex and surface pressure forces have been implemented on top of the necessary modifications of the...

Benefits of radar-derived surface current assimilation for South of Africa ocean circulation ArchiMer
Couvelard, Xavier; Messager, Christophe; Penven, Pierrick; Smet, Sébastien; Lattes, Philippe.
The oceanic circulation south of Africa is characterised by a complex dynamics with a strong variability due to the presence of the Agulhas current and numerous eddies. This area of interest is also the location of several natural gas fields under seafloor which are targeted for drilling and exploitation. The complex and powerful ocean currents induces significant issues for ship operations at the surface as well as under the surface for deep sea operations. Therefore, the knowledge of the state of the currents and the ability to forecast them in a realistic manners could greatly enforce the safety of various marine operation. Following this objective, an array of HF radar systems were deployed to allow a detailed knowledge of the Agulhas currents and its...

Mixed Layer formation and restratification in presence of mesoscale and submesoscale turbulence ArchiMer
Couvelard, Xavier; Dumas, Franck; Garnier, Valerie; Ponte, Aurelien; Talandier, Claude; Treguier, Anne-marie.
Recent realistic high resolution modeling studies show a net increase of submesoscale activity in fall and winter when the mixed layer depth is at its maximum. This submesoscale activity increase is associated with a reduced deepening of the mixed layer. Both phenomena can be related to the development of mixed layer instabilities, which convert available potential energy into submesoscale eddy kinetic energy and contribute to a fast restratification by slumping the horizontal density gradient in the mixed layer. In the present work, the mixed layer formation and restratification was studied by uniformly cooling a fully turbulent zonal jet in a periodic channel at different resolutions, from eddy resolving (10 km) to submesoscale permitting (2 km). The...

Evolution of an oceanic anticyclone in the lee of Madeira Island: In situ and remote sensing survey ArchiMer
Caldeira, Rui M. A.; Stegner, Alexandre; Couvelard, Xavier; Araujo, Isabel B.; Testor, Pierre; Lorenzo, Alvaro.
Island wakes are areas of a strong eddy activity influencing the availability and transport of organic matter in the ocean which, in turn impact biological productivity. Despite this, eddy formation in the lee of North Atlantic tropical islands is scarcely documented, except for the Canary Islands. Moreover, the occurrence of anticyclones leeward of Madeira has seldom been detected. During the summer of 2011, a multiplatform approach, combining satellite data with in situ measurements, was used to study an anticyclonic eddy generated in the lee of the Madeira Island. The main objective was to confirm recent numerical evidence suggesting that orographically perturbed winds can induce anticyclonic eddies leeward of Madeira, particularly during summer months....

Dynamics of an Equatorial River Plume: Theory and Numerical Experiments Applied to the Congo Plume Case ArchiMer
Vic, Clement; Berger, Henrick; Treguier, Anne-marie; Couvelard, Xavier.
The Congo River has the second largest rate of flow in the world and is mainly responsible for the broad tongue of low-salinity water that is observed in the Gulf of Guinea. Despite their importance, near-equatorial river plumes have not been studied as thoroughly as midlatitude plumes and their dynamics remain unclear. Using both theory and idealized numerical experiments that reproduce the major characteristics of the region, the authors have investigated the dynamics of the Congo River plume and examine its sensitivity to different forcing mechanisms. It is found that near-equatorial plumes are more likely to be surface trapped than midlatitude plumes, and the importance of the effect in describing the strong offshore extent of the low-salinity tongue...

Circulation on the Northwestern Iberian Margin: Vertical structure and seasonality of the alongshore flows ArchiMer
Teles-machado, Ana; Peliz, Alvaro; Mcwilliams, James C.; Couvelard, Xavier; Ambar, Isabel.
We describe the seasonal cycle of the alongshore flows on the Northwestern Iberian Margin and explain what are the important mechanisms forcing the system. We used a 20-year model simulation at 2.3 km horizontal resolution, with realistic atmospheric forcing and covering the whole Western Iberian Margin. The model results are compared with satellite data, with data measured at two moored buoys and with a compilation of current meter data available for the study region. We show that currents over the slope are divided in three different cores: the Iberian Poleward Current (IPC) occupying the top 350 m, a deeper core at Mediterranean Water levels (∼600–1200 m) and in between the two, an equatorward core centered just beneath the IPC core, the Upper Slope...

Challenges of building an operational ocean forecasting system for small island regions: regional to local ArchiMer
Caldeira, Rui; Couvelard, Xavier; Vieira, Rui; Lucas, Carlos; Sala, Iria; Casanova, Ignasi Valles.
An ocean circulation forecasting model for the Madeira Archipelago is operational since May 2010. Developing a forecasting system for a small island oceanic region, deprived from in-situ observations, is a challenging task since there are limited ways to validate predictions. Furthermore, model resolution concurrent with insufficient computational power, locally available, are other limiting factors to consider. Regional models combined with the possibility to downscale solutions onto a higher resolution island-scale model is a way to overcome some of such limitations. Nevertheless, generalised regional models must be able to accurately represent the far-field and transport important features such as meddies onto the local systems; while island-scale...
