HOUSEHOLD DEMAND FOR FRESH POTATOES: A DISAGGREGATED CROSS-SECTIONAL ANALYSIS AgEcon
Cox, Thomas L.; Ziemer, Rod F.; Chavas, Jean-Paul.
A model of household fresh potato consumption incorporating prices, income, family size and other socioeconomic effects is estimated by maximum likelihood Tobit procedures. The effects of truncation bias due to non-purchasing households are evaluated and decompositions of the Tobit elasticities are performed for various sub-groups of the data. The market development implications of this type of disaggregated commodity analysis are explored.

THE EFFECTS OF CANADIAN SPECIAL MILK CLASSES IN THE U.S. AND CANADIAN DAIRY TRADE AgEcon
Seol, Hwayoung; Cox, Thomas L.; Chavas, Jean-Paul.
Canadian Special Milk Classes have been the focus of longstanding WTO disputes on whether they work as export subsidies. This paper models the Special Milk Classes and Commercial Export Milk (CEM) explicitly in the U.S. and Canadian dairy trade and finds their effects. The effects of trade liberalization are also discussed.

THE RETURNS FROM RESEARCH IN AUSTRALIAN BROADACRE AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Mullen, John D.; Cox, Thomas L..
Many people share the view that too little is invested in R & D in agriculture. The relationship between several measures of productivity and research expenditure was estimated using data from ABARE's surveys of broadacre industries and a new data series on R & D expenditure for the period 1953 to 1988. The internal rate of return to research was estimated to be in the range of 15 to 40 percent which does not provide strong evidence that Australia is either under- or over-investing in public research.

THE DEMAND FOR FLUID MILK PRODUCTS IN THE U.S.: A DEMAND SYSTEMS APPROACH AgEcon
Gould, Brian W.; Cox, Thomas L.; Perali, Carlo Federico.
The demand for fluid milk products has changed dramatically in recent years not only in terms of lower levels consumed but also in terms of the composition of the products consumed. A time-series based demand system analysis of the market for lowfat and whole milk products is developed incorporating the effects of changes in prices and demographic characteristics. From the estimated model, the impacts of future changes in the demographic profile of the U.S. population on fluid milk demand are analyzed.

Strategic Implications of Retail Pricing in the U.S. Fluid Milk Market AgEcon
Dhar, Tirtha Pratim; Cox, Thomas L..
We explore brand level strategic interactions between skim/low fat and whole milk brands by estimating detailed price elasticity matrix using quadratic almost ideal demand system for eight major U.S. cities. Results of our analysis suggest that the market and demand behavior of skim/low fat and whole milk brands are different. Demand for skim/low fat milk is more elastic than in the case of whole milk. Highly inelastic demand for large number of Private label whole milk brands suggests 'loss leader' pricing strategy by the retailers. Such pricing strategy does not seem to be the norm in skim/low fat milk market.

MEASURING PRODUCTIVITY GROWTH IN AUSTRALIAN BROADACRE AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Mullen, John D.; Cox, Thomas L..
An important source of growth for Australian broadacre agriculture has been technical progress. We compare alternative measures of productivity growth including the traditional Tornqvist-Thiel total factor productivity index; variants of this approach that allow decreasing returns to scale; the Fisher ideal index; other nonparametric measures that do not impose particular functional forms and an econometric estimate from a translog industry cost function. The annual growth in productivity in broadacre agriculture over the period from 1953 to 1994 was in the range of 2.4 to 2.6 per cent and hence was quite robust to measurement technique.

MAXIMUM SIMULATED LIKELIHOOD: A BRIEF INTRODUCTION FOR PRACTITIONERS AgEcon
Arias, Carlos; Cox, Thomas L..
This paper discusses the increasing importance of probability simulation methods in the context of Maximum Simulated Likelihood. Three probability simulators are analyzed following their chronological order of appearance. This analysis provides an intuitive approach to the basic idea behind probability simulation, the successive improvements and probable future developments. The paper pays special attention to the role of simulation noise in Maximum Simulated Likelihood.

A GENERALIZED DISTANCE FUNCTION AND THE ANALYSIS OF PRODUCTION EFFICIENCY AgEcon
Chavas, Jean-Paul; Cox, Thomas L..
A generalization of Shephard's distance functions is proposed, extending the usefulness of distance functions in economic analysis. Applications to efficiency measurements and productivity analysis are presented. New indexes of productivity, and technical, allocative and scale efficiency are proposed and analyzed. Interpretation of these indexes in terms of ray-average cost, ray-average revenue, and cost-to-revenue ratio is discussed.

Nonparametric measures of the impact of public research expenditures on Australian broadacre agriculture AgEcon
Cox, Thomas L.; Mullen, John D.; Hu, Wensheng.
Nonparametric methods are used to measure the impact of public research expenditures on Australian broadacre agriculture over the 1953–94 period. Results using both unrestricted and 30‐year lagged specifications of the research impacts on productivity suggest that while certain aspects of the nonparametric multi‐input/output technologies are quite robust to alternative specifications (in particular, the associated Malmquist total factor productivity indexes), other aspects are less stable (in particular, the indexes on input and, to a lesser extent, output biased technical change). Internal rates of return to research expenditures on Australian broadacre agriculture are estimated to be in the 12 per cent to 20 per cent range.

A PRIMAL-DUAL APPROACH TO NONPARAMETRIC PRODUCTIVITY ANALYSIS: THE CASE OF U.S. AGRICULTURE AgEcon
Chavas, Jean-Paul; Cox, Thomas L..
Nonparametric methods for measuring productivity indexes based on bounds for the underlying production technology are presented. Following Banker and Maindiratta, the lower bound is obtained from a primal approach while the upper bound corresponds to a dual approach to nonparametric production analysis. These nonparametric bounds are then used to estimate input-based and output- based distance functions. These radial measures provide the basis for measuring productivity indexes. Application to times series data on U.S. agriculture indicates a large gap between the primal lower bound and the dual upper bound. This generates striking differences between the primal and dual nonparametric productivity indexes.

SPATIAL EQUILIBRIUM WITH INTERMEDIATE PRODUCTS: IMPLEMENTATION AND VALIDATION IN THE MERCOSUR AgEcon
Waquil, Paulo Dabdab; Cox, Thomas L..
This paper develops the formulation of a spatial equilibrium model with intermediate products. The presence of intermediate products brings a better representation of the real world, accounting for the technological relationships among commodities in the several stages of production. Instead of the usual assumption of constant costs of transformation, positively sloped cost of transformation functions are assumed, reflecting increasing marginal costs of transformation. The model is implemented and validated in the analysis of the optimal allocation and pricing of animal products, grains and oilseeds in the MERCOSUR.

ISSUES IN DATA MANAGEMENT OF EXPENDITURE SURVEYS: AN EXAMPLE FROM THE COLOMBIAN 1984-85 URBAN SURVEY AgEcon
Perali, Carlo Federico; Cox, Thomas L..
This study examines some of the issues that are often encountered when analysing the socio-economic information of expenditure surveys using the Colombian 1985 urban expenditure survey as an example. This study discusses the problem of estimating prices when only information on expenditures and demographic characteristics is available, the options available when aggregating commodities and defining demographic or labour information, and the advantages and drawbacks in choosing total expenditure as a proxy for income or as the metric for poverty measurement. The study also applies non-parametric density estimation as a form of exploratory data analysis and as a means to learn from the data about the most proper parametric specification.

INTERREGIONAL ANALYSIS OF THE IMPACTS OF ELIMINATING EUROPEAN UNION MILK PRODUCTION QUOTAS AgEcon
Bouamra-Mechemache, Zohra; Chavas, Jean-Paul; Cox, Thomas L.; Requillart, Vincent.
An hedonic spatial equilibrium model of the European Union dairy sector is used to evaluate the interregional impacts of eliminating milk production quotas under a variety of domestic policy (intervention prices and domestic production/consumption subsidies) and trade policies (tariff rate quotas and export subsidies). The simulation results indicate that the removal of the EU milk production quotas is welfare improving both only with substantial liberalization of trade. Hence, production quota removal by itself is not a desirable policy alternative for either the EU or the world. Rather, policy reform should involve the joint consideration of domestic and trade policy instruments.

ON MARKET EQUILIBRIUM ANALYSIS AgEcon
Chavas, Jean-Paul; Cox, Thomas L..
The paper develops the implications of competitive market equilibrium for production and household behavior when some prices are endogenously determined. The properties of market equilibrium functions are explored, including the effects of pricing policy. A Slutsky-type equation relating compensated and uncompensated market equilibrium functions is derived. Implications for multi-market welfare analysis are presented, focusing on the effects of pricing policy and technical change.
