EFFECT OF COB SIZE AND MOISTURE CONTENT ON SHELLING PERFORMANCE OF LEVER OPERATED MAIZE COB SHELLER CIGR Journal
Bashir, Basharat; DIXIT, JAGVIR; DIXIT, JAGVIR.
The operating factors were studied for different maize shelling methods (lever operated maize sheller, octagonal tubular maize sheller and conventional beating method) that affected losses and capacity of shelling methods. The factors comprised two levels of moisture content (16-20 % and 12-16 %) and three levels of cob size (< 30mm, 30-40 mm, and > 40 mm).  The results of this study indicated that the shelling force required to detach maize grains from the unshelled cob was dependent on the grain moisture content and cob size. Highest shelling force of 173.5 N was found at moisture content of 16-20% w.b. and cob diameter > 40 mm while the lowest shelling force of (133 N) was found at cob diameter <30 mm and moisture content of...

Anthropometric survey of farm workers of Ladakh region of India and its application in equipment design CIGR Journal
DIXIT, JAGVIR; Namgial, Deldan; Sharma, Sushil; Lohan, Shiv Kumar; Kumar, Dinesh.
Abstract: The environment and resultant discomfort has severe impact on overall working efficiency of human and machine while using farm tools and machinery in hills.  The Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir State of India is predominantly hilly.  Anthropometric data of agricultural workers is very essential for the safe and efficient design of farm machinery.  In the present studies, an anthropometric survey was carried out for agricultural workers of Ladakh region, wherein 90 male and female agricultural workers were selected and 79 body dimensions were precisely measured and recorded from each subject, thereafter analysed statistically.  For making the data comprehensive and more useful, a set of 23 body dimensions, which are having direct implications...

Design and Development of Walnut Cracking Machine CIGR Journal
DIXIT, JAGVIR; Ravindra, Kalla; DIXIT, JAGVIR.
A motorized walnut cracking machine was designed and developed to overcome the drudgery and huge time involved in traditional walnut cracking and the prototype was evaluated under three different levels of shell moisture content (db) (25-30%, 15-20% and 8-12%) and three different levels of roller speeds (25 rpm, 43 rpm and 69 rpm) of the cracking unit. The main components of machine involves motor, frame, hopper, conveying tray, cracking unit, conveying chute and collecting bin. The working principle of cracking unit is based on the compression of the walnut between two rollers rotating in opposite direction. Sphericity coefficient for soft shelled, medium shelled and hard shelled walnut were 0.850, 0.845 and 0.857, respectively. The geometric mean...

Adaption of Modified Brush Cutter for Rice Harvesting CIGR Journal
DIXIT, JAGVIR.
An existing 1.5kW brush cutter was modified and evaluated with the view to adapt a low-cost rice harvesting machine.  The modifications included replacing existing blade with circular saw blade, incorporating a guider and a driver to lay down the harvested crop in swath and attachment of a harness belt for easy and comfortable operation. The machine was evaluated keeping in view major influencing factors i.e., crop establishment (conventional transplanting, system of rice intensification (SRI), and mechanical transplanting), blade type (B1: 40 teeth, pitch 1.92 and B2: 80 teeth, pitch 0.96) and straw moisture content (38-42, 33-37 and  28-32%, w.b). The results showed that the height of cut was significantly affected (p<0.05) by the crop...
