CASH - FUTURES PRICE RELATIONSHIPS: GUIDES TO CORN MARKETING AgEcon
Karlson, Nicholas; Anderson, Brad; Dahl, Reynold P..
This study analyzes the role of futures markets in corn marketing decisions. Besides price discovery and price-risk management, hedging in the futures market facilitates a return to corn storage. First, the seasonality in corn marketings and prices is examined. Second, the seasonality of the difference between cash and futures prices, the basis, is analyzed. Understanding the basis is important because it is a useful guide for decisions on corn storage and sale. Finally, several corn marketing strategies are developed and analyzed. Cash corn prices at Clarkfield, Minnesota, and futures prices on the Chicago Board of Trade are used in the analysis.

ANALYZING CHANGING PRICE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN WHEAT FUTURES MARKETS AgEcon
Strohmaier, Jay S.; Dahl, Reynold P..
The purpose of this paper is to determine if hedging effectiveness can be enhanced with an understanding of seasonal and interseasonal changes in relative prices between the three wheat futures markets. The specific objectives of the analysis are to address the following questions: (1) What factors have contributed to increased variability in relative prices? (2)Do seasonal patterns in relative prices exist, and if so, how reliable is such seasonality? (3)How can hard red spring wheat hedgers use changing price spreads to increase the effectiveness of their hedging programs? (4) Can fundamental factors of supply and demand be used to predict forthcoming relative prices, and thus guide hedgers in selection of the most advantageous hedging market?

Structural Change and Performance of Grain Marketing Cooperatives AgEcon
Dahl, Reynold P..
The U.S. grain marketing system has undergone many structural changes in the 1980s. In no part of the system has structural change been more far-reaching and extensive than in farmer-owned cooperatives. The purpose of this paper is to analyze changes in grain marketing and induced structural adjustments in grain marketing cooperatives at the local, regional, and interregional levels. The impact of these structural changes on the competitive posture of cooperatives in the grain marketing system is also discussed along with structural adjustments anticipated in the 1990s.
