This is a guide to the fishes of the Bay of Biscay, an important fishing area for French and Spanish ports on the Atlantic seaboard. It offers a precise and documented overview along with detailed maps of the families and species of fishes in the Bay of Biscay: distribution according to abundance, catch weight and numbers, spring and autumn densities, relative richness according to area. This work is a unique source of information, a long felt need, and constitutes a baseline reference for potential future changes caused by climate change or human activities. |

1. -Norwestlant expedition and the "Thalassa" cruise. The International commission of NW Atlantic fisheries (I.C.N.A.F.) organized from April to July 1963 a joint expedition in the Labrador Sea and the Irminger Sea, whose main purpose was to study cod and sebaste planktonic stages according to environmental conditions on the continental fringe of Labrador, Greenland and Iceland.Twelve vessels from Canada, Iceland, U.S.S.R., Norway, Denmark, United-Kingdom and France collaborated with this research in the different sectors that had been allocated to them.2.-The overall program was based on the following points: 1° assessing simultaneously cod and sebaste reproduction on the continental shelf and slope, through a large number of plankton fisheries; 2° looking... |

Seven umbrines have been described on European coasts and African coasts north of the equator. For a long time, only one species was recognized, Umbrina cirrosa Linnaeus, 1758. In his "Natural History of Fishes" (1830, p. 171-177), Cuvier called this species U. vulgaris. There are 22 soft rays on the dorsal fin and 65 lateral line scales; light coloured body and there are 25 to 30 wavy bluish lines edged with black on the sides.... |

One of the first tasks delegated to the Moroccan Fisheries Institute was to establish an inventory of the fish stocks in Morocco and I was assigned to organise this inventory in late 1946. As soon as a team of scientists could be brought together, I set out to gather all the observations on the various species recorded caught during our outings on board fishing boats and during our regular visits to different fish landing ports. This inventory was set up to only include species for which their origin could be properly verified so that previously published data could be validated and completed with additional biological, ecological or taxonomic information. The aim was to not only produce a detailed inventory but also to provide a useful tool for biologists... |

The bonito, which has not reached the same level of economic importance as bluefin tuna, nevertheless constitutes an appreciable fishery along the Atlantic coast of Morocco. Here, we compile the results of some observations that, although incomplete, will help pinpoint certain aspects of the biology of this scombroid fish that has never been studied in Morocco. |
