Contribution to the marine biodiversity inventory: a checklist of the Amphipoda (Crustacea) of the Southern Ocean OMA
De Broyer, C.; Jazdzewski, K..
A checklist, with synonymical bibliography, of all benthic, supralittoral and pelagic Amphipoda (Gammaridea, Caprellidea and Hyperiidea) occurring in the Southern Ocean is drawn up, mostly from taxonomical literature checked until 31 December 1992. 883 taxa have been recorded: 711 spp. and subspp. of Gammaridea, 28 spp. of Caprellidea, 69 spp. and subspp. of Hyperiidea as well as 75 unidentified spp. (73 Gammaridea, 2 Caprellidea). Distribution in the East or West Antarctic sub-regions, in the Subantarctic Islands sub-region, in the Magellanic sub-region and in the Tristan da Cunha district is mentioned. Bathyal and abyssal benthic occurrence is indicated as well as the general bathymetrical distribution of the pelagic species occurring south of 45°S. The...

Faunal diversity of the benthic amphipods (Crustacea) of the Magellan region as compared to the Antarctic (preliminary results) OMA
De Broyer, C.; Rauschert, M..
To investigate the marine benthic ecosystems of the Magellan region and to compare them with the better known Antarctic systems, three campaigns were recently carried out in this area: the Joint Magellan 'Victor Hensen' Campaign 1994, the 'Polarstern' ANT XIII/4 cruise 1996, and the 'Vidal Gormaz' CIMAR FIORDO II cruise 1996. Numerous and diverse zoobenthos samples were collected mostly with an Agassiz trawl and with a small dredge, an ephibenthic sledge, with baited traps or by diving. All gears together gathered more than 132,000 specimens of gammaridean and caprellidean amphipods. 137 species of gammaridean amphipods have been identified from the material to date. About 20% of these species appear to be new for science. This taxonomic work takes place...

Trophic ecology of the family Artedidraconidae (Pisces: Osteichthyes) and its impact on the eastern Weddell Sea benthic system OMA
Olaso, I.; Rauschert, M.; De Broyer, C..
The family Artedidraconidae comprises small, endemic Antarctic fishes, known as plunderfish, mostly distributed in the High Antarctic region. To study the diet of these specialised benthic feeders, stomach contents of the 11 most abundant species in the eastern Weddell Sea were examined. Prey composition was identified to the lowest taxonomic level for peracarid crustaceans and polychaetes. Half of the food volume comprised 36 crustacean taxa (26 of which were amphipods). The other half was made up of 7 polychaete taxa and 8 other zoological groups. The diet of plunderfishes <20 cm long was found to include about 70% peracarid crustaceans, 50% of which were amphipods, mainly gammarids; the rest of their diet was mostly sessile and motile polychaetes....

Notes sur les <i>Orchomene</i> (Amphipodes, Lysianassidae) de l'Ocean Austral: 1. Description d'<i>Orchomene hureaui</i> n. sp. de Terre Adélie OMA
De Broyer, C..
A new Antarctic lysianassid amphipod, Orchomene hureaui sp.n. from Addlie Land is described and illustrated. The male is unknown. The 2 females were from the stomach of an Adelie penguin. Its epistome is straight and is just in front of the upper lip. The lateral cephalic lobes are rounded and eyes are present. Coxa I is trapezoidal and wide distally, the carpus of gnathopod I shorter than propodite and with no postero-distal lobe, the palm is transverse, slightly convex and deeply toothed. Gnathopod II is subchelate and coxa V has subequal inferior lobes. Uropod III has long setose branches and the telson is divided. The ecology and relations with other Orchomene spp are discussed.
