Premiers effets du réhaussement artificiel d'une plage sableuse le long de la côte belge ArchiMer
De Moor, G..
Mainly by beach profiling and beach budget computation the author studies the evolution of an erosional coastal megaprotuberance, hitting a section of the belgian coast and provoking a lowering of the beach and a retreat of the dune foot.

Morphodynamics and sediment dynamics in the Southern Bight, Belgium OMA
Lanckneus, J.; De Moor, G.; Vande Velde, L.; De Winne, E.; Sanchez Almazo, I.; Garrido Martín, T..
The Research Unit Marine and Coastal Geomorphology of the University of Ghent has been involved for 15 years in research projects dealing with the genesis, the present-day morphodynamics and sediment dynamics and the maintenance mechanisms of sandbanks. Such a research has, in addition to the scientific value, several applications in the field of offshore engineering, management of natural resources, coastal protection and environment policy, which are discussed in the present paper.

Bedforms on the Middelkerke Bank, southern North Sea OMA
Lanckneus, J.; De Moor, G..
Large dunes cover the flanks and summit of the Middelkerke Bank. They have constant orientation heights ranging from 0.5 to 5 m, wavelengths of 75 to 150 m and in most cases asymmetrical profiles. No relationships could be established between the heights of the large dunes and the grain sizes of the sediment or the water depth in which they are developed. The slopes of both lee and stoss flanks are very low. Almost every large dune on the bank can assume both ebb and flood orientations through time. Two cases are presented in which particular swell and wind conditions induced common orientations to nearly all the large dunes. No significant migration was observed for six large dunes on the northern end of the bank over a time span of 13 moths during which...

Cartographie du Middelkerke Bank: dynamique sédimentaire, structure géologique, facies sédimentaires OMA
Lanckneus, J.; De Moor, G.; Berné, S.; Chamley, H.; De Batist, M.; Henriet, J.-P.; Terwindt, J.; Trentesaux, A..
The paper analyses the first results obtained in the framework of the RESECUSED project (MAST) whose objectives are the detailed analysis of the behaviour of sediments and bedforms of and on the Middelkerke Bank (Belgian Continental Shelf) and the study of the interaction between water movement, sediment transport and bedform mobility. The results include a preliminary analysis of the residual bottom load transport paths deduced from side scan sonar registrations, a map of the sandwaves on the bank, the first grain-size results of the superficial sediment and a study on the internal structure of the bank.

The use of the McLaren Model for the determination of residual transport directions on the Gootebank, Southern North Sea OMA
Lanckneus, J.; De Moor, G.; Van Lancker, V.R.M.; De Schaepmeester, G..
Sixty samples were collected on the Gootebank to assess the application of the McLaren sediment transport model on a tidal sandbank environment. Residual sediment transport directions were deduced and compared with the results of a detailed bedform analysis obtained by side-scan sonar recordings. Results show that when sediments become finer and better sorted, the corresponding skewness becomes more positive which is in contradiction with the sediment transfer function of McLaren and Bowles (1985). Comparison of the directions of residual sediment transport deduced from bedform analysis and from the sediment trend analysis shows that a good similarity is reached in the adjacent swales and that an offset of 90° exists on the bank. The transversal grain-size...

Grain size trends associated with net sediment transport patterns: an example from the Belgian continental shelf OMA
Gao, S.; Collins, M.B.; Lanckneus, J.; De Moor, G.; Van Lancker, V.R.M..
Grain size trends in relation to net sediment transport pathways are examined, using some commonly-used grain size parameters. The results of the trend analysis (for 15 types of the trends) are compared with a known net sediment transport pathways established on the basis of the sandbank hydro- and sediment-dynamics (i.e. general water and sediment movement patterns and bedform asymmetry). It is shown that: (1) the results for grain size trends associated with "a worsening in sorting along the transport pathways" have little similarity to transport pathways; (2) the results for grain size trends associated with "an improvement in sorting along the transport pathways" have relatively high degree of similarity to the identified pathways; and (3) the...

Numerical data about present day sediment dynamics on the Flemish Banks (Southern Bight, North Sea) OMA
De Moor, G..
The paper analyses present day residual morpho-dynamics and sediment dynamics on the Kwintebank, partly on ground of volumetric monitoring and partly of visual bank profile comparison, departing from geomorphological techniques, requiring sequential detailed bathymetric profiling, high precision navigation and positioning, and profile normalization, uniformization and equalization. It aims at a quantified approach of shape and location change and of sediment migration problems. It presents numerical data about volumetric evolution trends on the bank and advances a dynamical subdivision of the bank and the existence of different sand transportation mechanisms.

Erosie aan de Belgische kust OMA
De Moor, G..
Intense residual erosion attacks several sections of the Belgian coast. During the last decades this coast has been hit over several kilometers at Knokke, at Bredene-De Haan, at Lombardsijde, at Koksijde and at De Panne. A sequence of beach budgets shows the phenomenon and its importance and proves that different morphodynamic sections follow one another all along the rectilinear coast. The author ascribes every erosive section to an erosive megaprotuberans attacking the coast over a more or less long distance during a more or less long time span. He proves that such megaprotuberans develops gradually, that it is part of a cyclic macroprocess of coastal evolution that lasts several decades, sweeps the cost and whose aggressive phase is followed up by a...

Environmental setting, morphology and volumetric evolution of the Middelkerke Bank (southern North Sea) OMA
Lanckneus, J.; De Moor, G.; Stolk, A..
The Middelkerke Bank, a tidal sandbank located in the southern North Sea on the Belgian continental platform has been the object of a multidisciplinary and international research project. The morphological and hydrodynamical setting of the study area is presented. A complete side-scan sonar coverage of the bank allowed a detailed analysis of the morphology of the bank and of its superimposed bedforms. Large dunes cover the flanks and summit of the Middelkerke Bank. They have a constant orientation, a height ranging from 0.5 to 5 m, a wavelength from 75 to 150 m and in most cases an asymmetrical profile. The slopes of both lee and stoss flanks are very low. Small and medium dune fields occur on the entire bank and in the adjacent swales. They are 2-D and...
