Predictive modelling of coastal habitats using remote sensing data and fuzzy logic: A case for seaweed in Brittany (France) 5
De Oliveira, Eric; Populus, Jacques; Guillaumont, Brigitte.
The aim of this study is to model the seaweed species distribution with respect to environmental parameters. We focused on fixed species of algae, such as fucoids. Firstly, we identified environmental parameters, such as substratum nature, immersion time, exposure, etc., which determine the seaweed distribution. Secondly, we used field sampling to compute the distribution laws for seaweed according to the environmental parameters selected. Thirdly, we used the distribution laws and the environmental parameters to perform predictive mapping of seaweed belts with a fuzzy logic method. Seaweed presence is directly dependent on the nature of the substratum. In the intertidal domain we used an alternative, because seaweed beds can be observed directly. We...

Towards prediction of seabed habitats 5
Populus, Jacques; Hamdi, Anouar; Golding, Neil; Van Lancker, Vera; De Oliveira, Eric.
Marine seabed habitats are highly influenced by the geophysical variables they feature. These are firstly seabed type, topography and exposure, but in the more inshore areas also include water transparency, salinity, temperature etc. Some relations have been established in a top-down approach between adequate combinations of these variables and the higher levels of the Eunis (European Nature Information System) habitat classification which is currently being used to harmonise seabed habitat mapping throughout Europe. These levels have been referred to as "Marine landscapes", as they are aggregations of a number of lower Eunis habitats from levels 4 to 6. More elaborate variables that are thought to have a bearing on habitat types can be computed from the...
