Diets of abundant fishes from beach seine catches in seagrass beds of a tropical bay (Gazi Bay, Kenya) OMA
De Troch, M.; Mees, J.; Wakwabi, E.O..
The composition of the diet of 14 fish species that were common in beach seine catches over the seagrass beds of Gazi Bay (Kenya) was investigated. Three trophic guilds could be distinguished based on dietary diversity and on the numerical and gravimetrical composition of the diet. <i>Herklotsichthys quadrimaculatus, Stolephorus indicus</i> and <i>Atherinomorus duodecimalis</i> were planktivores. Their stomach fullness index was low and the diet was not diverse. The main food items were harpacticoid and calanoid copepods and brachyuran zoea and megalopae. <i>Apogon thermalis, Fowleria aurita, Paramonacanthus barnardi, Mulloides flavolineatus, Lutjanus fulviflamma, L. argentimaculatus</i> and <i>Gerres...

Range extension and microhabitat of <i>Lightiella incisa</i> (Cephalocarida) OMA
De Troch, M.; Fiers, F.; Vincx, M..
During an intensive meiofauna sampling campaign in intertidal seagrass beds along the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula (Mexico), 131 specimens of <i>Lightiella incisa</i> (Cephalocarida, Crustacea) were recovered from the sediment. Two-thirds of the specimens were adults, one-third were pre-adults. This collection is the first record of this minute primitive crustacean in the western part of the Caribbean Sea, and extends the known range 3000 km from the type locality of Hastings Bay, Barbados. A detailed sampling protocol and environmental data made it possible to study the microhabitat preferences of this species, and perhaps for cephalocarids in general for the first time. The vertical distribution of <i>L. incisa</i> in...

New Tetragonicipitidae (Copepoda, Harpacticoida) from the Indo-Pacific OMA
Fiers, F.; De Troch, M..
During an intensive study of the copepod associations living on the seagrass <i>Thalassia hemprichii</i> (Ehrenberg) Ascherson in Gazi Bay (Kenya), three representatives of the harpacticoid family Tetragonicipitidae Lang, 1944 were found. <i>Diagoniceps laevis</i> Willey, 1930 previously reported from Bermuda (type locality) and the Bahamas. was found in Gazi Bay. Comparison with the Atlantic material revealed only minor differences. <i>Odaginiceps immanis</i> n. sp. is the fourth species of the genus, which was known until now from three species described from the Central Atlantic. The new genus <i>Mwania</i> is defined for <i>M. phytocola</i> n. sp. which, with its three-segmented endopodite of...

Ecologie van harpacticoide copepoden: structurele biodiversiteit in tropische zeegrasvelden = Ecology of harpacticoid copepods: structural biodiversity in tropical seagrass beds OMA
De Troch, M..
The term 'biodiversity' is the simple contraction of 'biological diversity', and at first sight the concept is simple too: biodiversity is the total sum of all biotic variation from genes to ecosystems (Purvis & Hector, 2000). The challenge comes in measuring such a broad concept in ways that are useful. The measurement of diversity of one place, group or time is in itself more or less useless. But comparable measurements of diversity from multiple places, groups or times can help us to understand how diversity arose and how we can maintain it. Marine biodiversity is higher in benthic rather than in pelagic systems, and in coasts rather than in open ocean since there is a greater range of habitats near the coast. In addition, losses of marine...

Zonation and structuring factors of meiofauna communities in a tropical seagrass bed (Gazi Bay, Kenya) OMA
De Troch, M.; Gurdebeke, S.; Fiers, F.; Vincx, M..
This study deals with the relation between tropical meiofauna and environmental variables by comparing the 'benthic' (i.e. in the bare sediment adjacent to seagrass plants) and the 'epiphytic' (i.e. in samples including seagrass plants) meiofauna associated with five seagrass species from the high intertidal to the high subtidal zone in Gazi Bay (Kenya). Ordination and variance analysis revealed three distinct 'benthic' and two 'epiphytic' meiofauna assemblages. These assemblages corresponded entirely with those identified for the seagrass species: a high intertidal pioneer association (<i>Halophila ovalis/Halodule wrightii</i>), an intertidal climax assemblage (<i>Thalassia hemprichii</i>) and a high subtidal pioneer association...
