This article examines some difficult decisions that agricultural economists must confront in doing research. Over many years, rules and standards have developed in agricultural economics that guide researchers, providing an underlying framework for research methods. This article deals with applying these seldom discussed guidelines to specific research situations confronted by agricultural economists. With this article, we hope to stimulate a dialogue among agricultural economists about the need for additional, appropriate methodological guidelines in agricultural economics research. |

This note describes an approach for teaching undergraduate students basic properties of cost and production functions with the aid of computer-generated illustrations. Parameters of a third degree polynomial are derived by making use of both the theoretical restrictions and the specific agricultural production process. The function is then used as the basis for the development of a simple computer graphics program which generates illustrations of the corresponding MPP, AC, and MC functions. Such illustrations can be used to make technically accurate visual aids. |

This paper examines the impacts of alternative management strategies for the production of alfalfa within the context of a total farm plan. A linear programming model is used to represent a 600-acre farm which can grow either grain crops or alfalfa. Alfalfa production competes with the grain crops for available land, labor, machinery, and field time over a calendar of tillage, plating, cutting, spraying, and harvesting activities. The profitability of an acre of alfalfa and the contribution of alfalfa to net returns for the farm varies quite widely depending on the particular alfalfa management strategy selected. |

Accounting techniques of farm enterprise budgeting are rarely linked to the axioms of static production theory and to capital theory. This paper illustrates how certain linkages may be established. Particular attention is given to handling problems of scale economies, optimal output levels, replacement of durable inputs, inflation, and technological change. Estimates in an illustrative budget are linked to specific points on average cost curves. Budgeting for representative farm situations is compared to budgeting for specific situations. |

This study examines the effects of price incentives on the availability of petroleum. Expected sustained higher crude oil prices to domestic producers constitute an incentive to increase both exploratory drilling and secondary and tertiary recovery of oil as well as production out of reserves. Reserve-production ratios tend to fall under high prices. Equalization of the domestic price to the real world price would make the U.S. self sufficient within a six year period. Constant prices result in no new additions to reserves after a five year period and very low production levels. Imports reach sixty-five percent of domestic consumption. |

This study developed an intertemporal profit function to determine optimal conservation adoption strategies under alternative scenarios with respect to crop prices, relative yields, discount rates, and other assumptions. Special emphasis was placed on determining from the analysis when the switchover from conventional to soil-conserving practices should take place. Technological change was incorporated by allowing crop yields to vary over time. Our analysis thus provides a new, more precise measurement of the cumulative net benefit differential. The optimal period for switchover from conventional to soil-conservating practices was found to vary depending on the assumptions made about corn prices and discount rates. Empirical results were based on an... |

Changes in income distribution are estimated for the U.S. South over the 1970 and 1980 decades using Gini coefficients for county-level, real family income. To explicitly investigate causal relationships between economic growth and inequality, a two-stage least squares model was estimated. In the 1970s, more rapid increases in inequality were associated with a reduced income growth rate, ceteris paribus, while in the 1980s, the opposite was true. Faster rates of income growth were associated with more rapid increases in inequality during the 1980s, but rates of income growth had no effect on changes in inequality during the 1970s. |
