The effect of temperature on the uptake of copper by the brine shrimp Artemia franciscana has been studied in chemically defined saltwater solutions. Animals were acclimated to temperatures ranging from 10°C to 35°C and exposed to copper at different temperatures within this range. The results show that within each temperature acclimation group, copper uptake increases with increasing temperature of exposure. Within each temperature acclimation group most of the variation can be related to the combined effect of temperature on the chemical speciation and diffusion rate of copper in the diffusion layer lining the exchange surfaces. The magnitude of the apparent activation energy for copper uptake indicates that it is a facilitated... |

The temperature in a natural Artemia habitat usually shows diurnal cyclic variations. It is important for inoculation and culturing purposes to know the survival under such conditions. The survival of four Artemia strains, Great Salt Lake and San Francisco Bay (USA), and Sfax and Mégrine (Tunisia) was studied over a period of 7 days, in different conditions of constant or diurnal fluctuating temperatures at two salinities. For the Great Salt Lake strain, the temperature fluctuation had no effect on the survival, as compared to constant temperature regimes (at 35 pro mille). For the other strains, temperature fluctuations had either no influence, or a beneficial influence on survival. In general, the tolerance of... |

The most striking phenomenon in the physiology of Artemia salina L. is the diapause phase under the form of a cyst in the gastrula stage. Thus for example, can dried cysts resist to extreme stress conditions, without affection of their hatchability after hydration. They withstand complete dehydration exception made for some traces of residual water (Whitaker, 1940); they resist to a temperature of 100°C for more than an hour (Hinton, 1954) , and can be kept at the absolute zero temperature for an indefinite period (Skoultchi and Morowitz 1964). Eventhough hydrated cysts are less tolerant of these "extravagant" conditions, they nevertheless are only slightly sensitive to anoxia for periods up to 5 months (Dutrieu,... |

The reproductive system of female cephalopods includes a glandular system (oviduct glands and nidamental glands), which develops considerably during sexual maturation and which plays an important part in the formation of the different egg membranes. It is generally uncoloured. An exception are the nidamental glands in Nautilus pompilius which are composed of opaque yellowish or yellowish-green tissue (Ref. 1). Moreover all Sepioidea and Myopsida and Ctenopteryx, a species belonging to the Oegopsida (Ref.2) possess accessory nidamental glands. The most striking property of these glands is their intense coloration varying from yellow to orange and red. This paper is a comparative study of the accessory nidamental glands... |

The physiological properties of total haemoglobin samples from Artemia populations of different geographical origin (Tientsin, Great Salt Lake, Chaplin Lake, Macau, Galera Zamba) have been studied in vitro. Measurements carried out with the diffusion chamber technique at different pH-values and temperatures, revealed significant differences in oxygen affinity (p50 values between 1.25 and 16.33 mm Hg), cooperativity (Hill coefficients between 1.07 and 2.18) and free oxygen-binding energy (between -34.7 and 56.2 Kj/mol). All the strains showed a decrease of oxygen affinity with increasing temperature, and a positive Bohr effect. Tientsin containing a considerable amount of Hbl (36.6%), shows the lowest oxygen... |

A flow-through test system for the study of toxicity and bioaccumulation processes is described. The apparatus can operate within a very wide range of flow rates. Flow deviations are less than 2% and the variation in test-agent concentration, (determined for copper) ranges from 3 to 8%. As a practical test a copper-toxicity experiment on adult Artemia was carried out and the results compared with data obtained from a similar but static assay. The results indicate that: - bioassay and accumulation experiments must preferably be carried out under flow-through conditions to keep the concentration and bioavailability of the toxicant as constant as possible;- the data analysis must be based upon measured test-solution toxicant-concentrations... |

Bioavailability of oxygen for the saline-water invertebrate Artemia franciscana was studied, since both oxygen concentration and oxygen diffusion rate change with salinity. Total haemoglobin concentration and the relative contribution of each of three haemoglobins was measured in specimens acclimated to different salinities and oxygen concentrations. Both haemoglobin concentration and contribution were influenced by salinity and the group observed (males, females with and females without eggs). Multiple regression analysis showed that total haemoglobin concentration was better correlated with oxygen concentration than oxygen partial pressure. The relative proportions of haemoglobins 1, 2 and 3 were better correlated with oxygen partial... |

1. In hypoxic conditions Artemia salina L. forms 3 hemoglobins, which until now had only been characterized by their electrophoretic mobility. 2. We have analysed the oxygen-binding properties of these 3 hemoglobins. 3. HbI shows the lowest oxygen affinity, has an almost negligible Bohr effect and it has no physiological adaptation to temperature changes. 4. HbII shows an intermediate oxygen affinity and a pronounced positive Bohr effect. 5. HbIII has a very high affinity for oxygen, an almost negligible Bohr effect and a good physiological adaptation to temperature changes. 6. By combining the 3 hemoglobins in different proportions Artemia salina L. must be able to withstand... |
