Biogeography Revisited with Network Theory: Retracing the History of Hydrothermal Vent Communities ArchiMer

Defining biogeographic provinces to understand the history and evolution of communities associated with a given kind of ecosystem is challenging and usually requires a priori assumptions to be made. We applied network theory, a holistic and exploratory method, to the most complete database of faunal distribution available on oceanic hydrothermal vents, environments which support fragmented and unstable ecosystems, to infer the processes driving their worldwide biogeography. A new species of scale-worm (Polychaeta : Polynoidae), Lepidonotopodium jouinae sp nov., from the Azores Triple Junction on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge ArchiMer

A new species of scale-worm, Lepidonotopodium jouinae, belonging to the sub-family Lepidonotopodinae (Polychaeta: Polynoidae) has been found in samples collected on deep-sea hydrothermal vent fields at the Azores Triple Junction on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It is the first species of Polynoidae described from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge hydrothermal vents. Other species of the same genus have been described from hydrothermal vents of the Pacific Ocean.

Temperature resistance of Hesiolyra bergi, a polychaetous annelid living on deep-sea vent smoker walls ArchiMer

For the first time, in vivo heat-exposure experiments were conducted on the hydrothermal vent polychaete Hesiolyra bergi from the hottest part of the vent biotope. Using a pressurised incubator equipped with video-facilities, we found that H. bergi, which forages around and in the tubes of the thermophilic Alvinella sp., became hyperactive once temperature exceeded 35 degreesC and further lost co-ordination in the 41 to 46 degreesC interval, just before death occurred. Another exposure experiment at 39 degreesC for 3 to 4 h led to 80 % mortality (max) 9 h after heat shock, and 100 % thereafter. Particle flux in the Rainbow hydrothermal vent field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge): Dynamics, mineral and biological composition ArchiMer

In order to provide information about the export and the distribution of hydrothermal particulate material to the surrounding deep ocean, four moorings were deployed in the vicinity of the hydrothermal Rainbow vent field (Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 36 degrees 14'N, 2250 m depth). The first mooring was a sediment trap with a current meter deployed at 2 m from a chimney of the Rainbow vent field and 1.5 m above the bottom (a.b.) for 16 days. It represented the reference for the initial composition of particles produced by the vent. The total mean mass particle flux (6.9 g m(-2) d(-1)) was distinctly higher than the flux measured at the shallower hydrothermal vents on the MAR segment. The study of members of the family Sphaerodoridae (Polychaeta) collected by CNEXO cruises in deep water in the Eastern Atlantic demonstrates the importance of the family in the bathyal zone. The specimens collected belong to eight species of which seven are new ; one is previously known from Antartica. Polar lipid fatty acids as indicators of trophic associations in a deep-sea vent system community ArchiMer

The polar lipid fatty acid (PLFA) profiles of invertebrates living in chemosynthetic communities can indicate the degree to which these animals depend on specific types of bacteria. To identify the nutritional sources of various species from deep-sea hydrothermal vents of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a Principal Component Analysis was performed using individual PLFA profiles as descriptors. Two associations representing different feeding groups were identified: (i) mussels, commensal polychaetes and gastropods, (ii) shrimps and crabs. The polychaete family Polynoidae (scale-worms) is well-represented at deep sea hydrothermal vents. Most species are free-living in a wide range of habitats: from high-temperature hydrothermal `chimney' walls to diffuse venting areas. Conversely, species of the genus Branchipolynoe live inside the mantle cavity of vent and seep mytilids. Several unknown animal forms have recently been collected in the immediate vicinity of hot hydrothermal vents in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, forming a flourishing community of organisms. A tubicolous polychaete builds parchment like tubes around some of the hydrothermal vents. The tubes are covered with particles of metallic sulfur. This annelid is a new species, and is called Alvinella pompejana, new genus and species. Chemical and thermal description of the environment of the Genesis hydrothermal vent community (13 degrees N, EPR) ArchiMer

The objective of this study is to describe the chemical and physical environment surrounding the vent organisms at the Genesis site (EPR, 2640 m). The main chimney is colonized by Riftia pachyptila, fishes Zoarcidae and crabs Bythograeidae. The top of the smoker is covered with tubes of polychaetes Alvinellidae, the frontier zone by limpet gastropods. Temperature measurements and water sampling were made on an axis along the chimney. The environment was characterized using relationships between chemical concentrations and temperature to provide a chemo-thermal model of the site. Estimation de la biomasse des peuplements associes aux sources hydrothermales profondes de la dorsale du Pacifique oriental a 13 degree N ArchiMer

Authors used photogrammetric and videogrammetric data collected at 13 degree N/EPR by the French manned submersible Cyana during the Biocyatherm and Biocyarise cruises to estimate the biomass of vent fauna. Two distinct faunal assemblages are associated with low- and high-temperature vents, Vestimentifera. The former, characterized by giant tube worms and bivalves, the latter by the so-called "Pompeii worms" (Alvinellidae). The cold vent biomass may reach 8.5 kg m super(2), far in excess of the hot vent biomass which amounts to 2.4 kg. Such a difference is linked to higher integrated symbiosis between primary and secondary producers in cold vent assemblages, hot vent secondary production being dependent upon separate ingestion/digestion processes.

Malacoceros samurai, a new species of Spionidae (Annelids : Polychaeta) from hydrothermal vent chimney walls on the south East Pacific Rise ArchiMer

Malacoceros samurai, new species, (Spionidae) is described from deep-sea hydrothermal vents of the southern East Pacific Rise, at 17 degrees 25'S. It is a large species, living on chimney walls along with Avinella spp. Although this species is described in the genus Malacoceros, it possesses unidentate hooded hooks and anterior scalpel-like aristate neurosetae, both characters which clearly differentiate it from other species of the same genus. These unusual characters require the modification of the generic diagnosis of Malacoceros.

The Eiffel Tower edifice is situated in the Lucky Strike hydrothermal vent field at a mean depth of 1690 m on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR). At this 11-m-high hydrothermal structure, different faunal assemblages, varying in visibly dominant species (mussels and shrimp), in mussel size and in density of mussel coverage, were sampled biologically and chemically. In the framework of the deep-sea environmental programme BIOZAIRE (Ifremer-Total), colonization trays were deployed for 283-433 days at three sites along the equatorial West African margin: ZA at 1300-m depth, ZC at 4000-m depth far from the Congo canyon and ZD at 4000-m depth close to the Congo canyon. The experiments aimed at determining the influence of depth and local environmental settings on macrofaunal colonization patterns and organic carbon degradation rates. Are spatial variations in the diets of hydrothermal fauna linked to local environmental conditions? ArchiMer

Trophic relationships in Bathymodiolus azoricus mussel bed communities on the Tour Eiffel hydrothermal edifice (Lucky Strike) were assessed using delta C-13 and delta N-15 signatures from 14 hydrothermal species. The nutritional basis of B. azoricus was also investigated with delta S-34. Faunal samples and environmental data (temperature, pH, total dissolved sulfide, iron and copper concentrations) were collected from 12 different locations on the edifice.
