The described red water phenomena, determined by the presence in waters of abnormally high densities of either Dinoflagellates or phototrophic bacteria Thiorhodaceae and Athiorhodaceae, provide very little information about the microbial associations developing during these crisis periods of strong seasonal character.Topographic, climatic and hydrologic conditions are of course necessary for the setting up of such phenomena (reduced circulation ecosystems, water warming, stratification or water stagnation). But besides these preliminary factors and their consequences on the alteration of the physico-chemical characteristics of waters, bacterial activities play an essential role in the primary or secondary ecosystem intoxication mechanisms that go together... |

Salses-Leucate lagoon in Roussillon is a water table of around 5 300 ha. This lagoon is in fact divided into two areas: to the south is the Salses lagoon which represents around two thirds of the total surface, to the north is the Leucate lagoon. Both lagoons are separated by a series of shoals (they create the frontier between the two departments of Aude and Pyrénées-Orientales). Up until recently, the Salses-Leucate lagoon only communicated permanently with the sea through its northern part (through the "grau"-estuary-of Leucate), which was deepened a few years ago. Not long ago, the reparation of the grau Saint-Ange, in the southern area, enabled a more important and more regular input of marine water.... |
