An Evaluation of Factors Affecting the Choice of Coastal Recreational Activities AgEcon
Paudel, Krishna P.; Caffey, Rex H.; Devkota, Nirmala.
A visitor’s decision to use a particular recreational site is influenced by the individual’s taste as well as the characteristics of the site. For this reason, improved knowledge of the visitors’ interests and factors influencing their choices are vital for both planning and policy formulations in coastal development. This study examines visitor characteristics and desired site specific characteristics in order to determine the factors affecting use of the Louisiana coast for specific recreational purposes. We use a multinomial logit model and internet survey data to evaluate the factors affecting individuals’ decisions to visit coastal Louisiana for a specific use. Results suggest that the major variables affecting the choice of coastal recreational...

ECONOMIC IMPACT ESTIMATION USING BOOTSTRAP SAMPLES OBTAINED FROM INTERNET AND INTERCEPT SURVEY DATA AgEcon
Devkota, Nirmala; Fannin, James Matthew; Paudel, Krishna P..
One of the challenges in estimating economic impacts of recreational activity and natural resource use is collecting survey data when the underlying population is not perfectly known. We combine bootstrapping techniques with input output analysis to estimate impacts from recreational activity at a barrier island in Louisiana. Per capita expenditure point estimates are bootstrapped and the 1,000 bootstrapped samples are shocked into an input output model to develop confidence intervals of economic impacts between the two surveys. Results show that for many sectors of the economy, confidence intervals do not overlap between survey modes. These results suggest that researchers using multiple survey modes should think carefully about how both the mode and...

Opening a Public Recreation Area to Revitalize Coastal Communities and Preserve Natural Resources in Louisiana: The Case of Elmer's Island AgEcon
Paudel, Krishna P.; Caffey, Rex H.; Devkota, Nirmala; Hall, Larry M..
The income capitalization approach is used, based on expenditure and nonmarket values collected from travel-cost and contingent valuation methodologies, to measure the feasibility of running a self-sustaining recreational site in coastal Louisiana. Through Internet and intercept surveys, a total of 2,696 respondents, 88% of them anglers, provided information on economic expenditures, destination preferences, and preferences for specific site amenities regarding Elmer's Island. The purchase and subsequent opening of the area to the public were found to be self-sustaining even when considering conservative economic estimates.

FORECASTING IRRIGATION WATER DEMAND: A STRUCTURAL AND TIME SERIES ANALYSIS AgEcon
Adhikari, Murali; Houston, Jack E.; Paudel, Laxmi; Bandyopadhyay, Dipankar; Paudel, Biswo Nath; Devkota, Nirmala.
An expected utility model was developed to capture the impacts of wealth, other economic, and institutional factors on irrigation acreage allocation decisions. Predicted water demand is derived from an expected utility structural model and various ARIMA models. No significant differences arise between forecasted irrigation acreage and, thereby, amount of forecasted water demand between econometric and time series models. However, estimates of water demand differ significantly from a Blaney-Criddle-based physical model. Keywords: water forecasting, acreage response, water slippage, BC formula

Calibrating Online Survey Sample for Economic Impact Analysis AgEcon
Devkota, Nirmala; Paudel, Krishna P.; Fannin, James Matthew; Hall, Larry M.; Caffey, Rex H..
Online surveys have emerged as low-cost data collection approach in empirical researches; however, the validity of data remains questionable. Therefore, we employed a stochastic frontier estimation method to calibrate online recreational expenditure. Study results suggested the presence of inefficiency on online surveys. Analysis was extended to estimate economic impact of nature based recreation on a local economy.

Factors Affecting the Decision to Adopt and Continue Best Management Practices by Broiler Producers AgEcon
Paudel, Krishna P.; Devkota, Nirmala.
We analyzed survey data collected from broiler producers in Louisiana to understand the factors affecting the longevity of best management practices adoption. Results indicated variables such as future expansion potential and the length of time the farm have been with the family decreases the chance of adopting best management practices. Our results support the idea that education and income would have positive results on the entry decision to adopt best management practices.

Dairy Supply Response under Stochastic Trend and Seasonality: A Structural Time Series Analysis AgEcon
Paudel, Laxmi; Houston, Jack E.; Devkota, Nirmala.
A structural time series methodology was used to examine the role of stochastic trend and seasonality in dairy supply response model. In our analysis, the dairy supply model with stochastic seasonality and deterministic trend performs best in terms of diagnostic tests, goodness-of-fit measures, and forecasting accuracy.

PRODUCTION TERMINATION AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO MITIGATE NUTRIENT POLLUTION AgEcon
Devkota, Nirmala; Paudel, Krishna P..
Nutrient runoff from agricultural land can be reduced through production termination to mitigate water pollution. The willingness to accept value to terminate the broiler production is evaluated using sample selection model. The result showed a positive relationship between the decision to participation and stated WTA value indicating the producers are willing to terminate the production but at high cost. The farmer’s perception about government role on water pollution, farm income, information and awareness about other pollution reduction alternatives play a major role on stated WTA amount as well as on participation decision.

BROILER PRODUCERS’ WILLINGNESS TO PAY TO MANAGE NUTRIENT POLLUTION AgEcon
Devkota, Nirmala; Paudel, Krishna P.; Parajuli, Shanta.
Economic incentives or disincentives play a major role on encouraging producers to implement environmentally benign production practices. We evaluated producers’ willingness to pay (WTP) value to represent the level of disincentives that motivate farmers to mitigate nutrient pollution. The result obtained by using ordered response model showed that farm size, farm income, and land available to spread litter are major variables that determine the producers’ WTP.
