The present paper surveys various methods used to analyse market power in the retail food industry. The strengths and weaknesses of these approaches are explored and a review of the issues in using New Empirical Industrial Organization (NEIO) and time-series models is provided. The absence of a theory underlying time-series models is highlighted and a review of some theoretical models in retailing is presented. The impact of imperfect competition in the food processing sector on retailing is also examined. It is argued that a combination of the approaches that minimises the weaknesses and builds on the strengths of single approaches may prove more promising for examining non-competitive behaviour. |

This paper examines the role of quality grades or standards in the supply chain. A model is employed which shows that quality grading provides information that lower search cost of buyers. Thus, when such standards are inadequate, information is distorted which results to asymmetric price transmission. The model is applied in the vegetable industry in Southern Philippines using primary and secondary data. A price asymmetry marketing margin model is estimated using secondary data for cabbage and onion. Results show that price transmission is symmetric for cabbage and asymmetric for onion. Asymmetry in price transmission implies that marketing information are not effectively transmitted in the food chain and that establishing quality grades or standards is... |

Special problems are presented when analysing supply chains because of the complexity of the relationships. In addressing this problem for a vegetable supply chain in Mindanao a pluralistic methodology is used. A soft systems framework was used to structure and analyse the problem and identify relevant systems. Issues we are addressing are efficiencies along the supply chain (including input supply issues, output marketing, quality control and transport) and relationships between the various participants in the supply chain. Qualitative and quantitative data collection methods have been used. Analysis is being conducted with qualitative data analysis techniques, LP farm household models, transaction cost economics, gap analysis, factor analysis and... |
