| The meridian flow through the Mozambique Channel is investigated by the difference between the sea level on each side of the channel and by the influence of the wind components measured at two low islands. From these data, it is inferred that the resulting variations in meridian flows in the northern and southern Mozambique Channel are roughly in phase and that the meridian transport is subjected to a seasonal cycle. Moreover, three unpublished cruises (1974-1975) in the Mozambique Channel show an anticyclonic gyre in the northern part (12-degrees-16-degrees-S) and a large southward flow across the narrows of the channel. According to the results of the cruises, this northern anticyclonic gyre is submitted to seasonal and also year-to-year variations. |
