Estimation of General and Commodity-Specific Inflation Rates Using Linear Time-Varying Constraints AgEcon
Rao, D.S. Prasada; Doran, Howard E.; Selvanathan, E.A..
In this paper, we consider the problem of estimating general and commodity-specific inflation rates by the stochastic approach considered in Clements and Izan (1987) and Selvanathan (1989). In order to achieve identification of commodity-specific rates, a linear constraint usually is imposed, and to make it operational, the constraint is generally imposed at an average over the time periods in the series. This paper uses recently developed methodology for estimation of econometric models with time-varying constraints (O’Donnel, Rambaldi, and Doran) to relax the constraint imposed at average shares and to derive commodity-specific inflation rates.

Some Properties of Simple Functions of Random Variables AgEcon
Anderson, Jock R.; Doran, Howard E..
Simple functions of random variables, such as sums, products, quotients and powers, arise in many applications in stochastic economics. It is sometimes convenient to determine the moments of such functions. Cases where this has been or can be done analytically are reviewed, and comments offered on procedures for when analysis fails.

THE DEMAND FOR DOMESTICALLY PRODUCED SAWN TIMBER: AN APPLICATION OF THE DIEWERT COST FUNCTION AgEcon
Doran, Howard E.; Williams, David F..
The Australian demand for domestically-produced sawn timber is investigated by considering its major use - as an input into residential construction. Using a cost function approach, a system of equations is derived expressing quantities demanded in terms of relative prices. Cross-price elasticities are estimated and the falling input-output ratio of timber in residential construction is analysed by decomposing the change in this ratio into price, outputs and taste/technology effects. A major finding is that, while substitution of timber for other inputs has been encouraged through relative price movements, this effect has been more than offset by taste and technology trends away from timber usage.

The Demand for Meats in Indonesia: A Censored Regression Approach AgEcon
Hutasuhut, Maradoli; O'Donnell, Christopher J.; Chang, Hui-Shung (Christie); Griffith, Garry R.; Doran, Howard E..
In this study, meat consumption and socio-demographic data from the 1990, 1993 and 1996 SUSENAS Household Food Expenditure and Consumption Surveys were employed to estimate the demand for meats in Indonesia. The provinces of DKI Jakarta and West Java were chosen as the areas of study because of the population, level of meat consumption and the availability and quality of information in these two provinces. Several statistical and econometric procedures were performed. Firstly, a cluster analysis (Nicol, 1991) was used to aggregate the 16 meat types recorded in the SUSENAS into four Meat Groups (MG-1, 2, 3 and 4). Secondly, a double truncation procedure was used to estimate the linear approximation of the Almost Ideal Demand System (LA/AIDS) because of the...

The Demand for Beef in Indonesia: Implications for Australian Agribusiness AgEcon
Doran, Howard E.; O'Donnell, Christopher J.; Griffith, Garry R.; Chang, Hui-Shung (Christie); Hutasuhut, Maradoli.
Meat consumption and socio-demographic data from the 1990, 1993 and 1996 SUSENAS Household Food Expenditure and Consumption Surveys were employed to estimate the demand for meats in Indonesia. The focus was on the Provinces of DKI Jakarta and West Java where about one-fourth of the Indonesian population reside. Statistical and econometric procedures were used to aggregate the 16 meat types recorded in the SUSENAS into four Meat Groups. They were then used to estimate the Linear Approximation of the Almost Ideal Demand System (LA/AIDS) model, taking into account zero observations and the restrictions on budget shares. The demand for Meat Group 1 (with the dominant meat, beef) is income-inelastic, whereas for Meat Group 2 (with the dominant meat,...
