Whatever their geographical or political point of view, Sea and coastal strategies highlight an “abyssal need” for knowledge and frequently call for a reinforcement and a better valorization of research in Marine Sciences and Technologies (MST). But, when a French public research resources inventory is needed, in the perspective of constructing a consistent action plan, we lack a framework to define thematic and disciplinary perimeter to be taken into account, to identify available data, to choose practical evaluation or estimation methods. The following study is a proposal to answer these questions. The methodology is mainly based on data collected by French High Council for Evaluation of Research and Higher Education (Hcéres) and completed by an inquiry.... |

Chronic effects of ammonia were studied in juvenile seabass, Dicentrarchus labrax (mean weight= 11 g), exposed for 63 days to eight stable ammonia concentrations, ranging from 0.24 to 0.90 mg l(-1) unionised ammonia nitrogen (UIA-N), respectively, from 6.1 to 22.3 mg l(-1) total ammonia nitrogen (TA-N). Temperature (21.8 degreesC), pH (8.0), salinity (37.0 ppt), and oxygen concentration (over 80% saturation at the outlet) were maintained constant. Fish were fed using a self-feeder device, and they were starved during the last 8 days. Mortality of 28.9 and 42.6% occur-red within the first 8 days at the two highest UIA-N concentrations, respectively, 0.90 and 0.88 mg l(-1). From days 0 to 55, a 1.8-fold increase in weight gain was observed under the 0.90-mg... |

The chronic effects of exposing sea bass (average initial weight 100 g) to ammonia in water at 22 degreesC were first evaluated over a 61-day period (period 1, P1) during which nine different groups were submitted to nine ambient ammonia levels ranging from 0.014 to 0.493 mg 1(-1) NH3-N (0.53-16.11 mg 1(-1) total ammonia nitrogen (TA-N)) and fed using self-feeders. At the end of P1, the fish were starved for 10 days (P2). Their recovery capacity was tested over 43 days (P3) after which the exogenous ammonia supply was stopped in all treatments and the fish were allowed to feed. After 20 days of exposure a highly significant effect of ammonia was evident from the decrease in feeding activity, voluntary feed intake (VFI) and specific growth rate (SGR), and... |

The demand for sea products is going only to increase in the years to come. Capture fisheries will not be enough (80 million tons / year) to supply and fish farming (38 million tons of products o fthe sea in 1998) already stands out to itself as a dominating actor. One of the missions of Ifremer in the field of the fish farming is the harmonious development of the field by mastering possible impacts due to rearing. The Institute developed competence in immunology, physiology, genetics, pathology and food. This study report of impact on the useful bases of physic and biology to elaborate the impact studies in marine fish farming, within the framework of the french law on the Classified Installations for Environmental Protection (ICPE), confined in the... |

Farmed sea fish production is at the moment relatively undeveloped in France (20 million alevins, 2,600 tonnes of fish, 165 million francs), but it has growth potential that is yet to be exploited. Installation plans are eliciting a great variety of reactions depending upon the areas of the shoreline. The various objections, often passionate, generally rely upon environmental arguments. And yet, objective data that would make it possible to evaluate the latter are in large part lacking. The government, accustomed to regulating fresh water, lacks benchmarks and experience in the marine environment. Property developers need basic outlines and data to build their cases. Scientists are called upon, in a national and international plan, to help aquafarming grow... |

Brown trout and rainbow trout (average weight 100 g) were reared in fresh water at 12 degrees C under the same conditions before transferring brown trout to sea water, in order to compare phosphorus utilisation in both species. Apparent phosphorus availability, orthophosphate excretion and phosphorus accretion in the fish were directly determined. Thus, actual phosphorus mass balance was built. Rainbow trout raised in fresh water had a higher phosphorus retention coefficient (maximum 50 %) than brown trout reared in fresh water (maximum 45 %). Transferring brown trout to sea water induced a reduction in phosphorus retention (maximum 39 %), Orthophosphate excretion, ranging 7-20 mg phosphorus per kg wet weight per day, represented 10-20 % of ingested... |

French marine fish farming deals with several species: sea bass, sea bream, turbot, trout and salmon. In 1992, 20 M fingerlings and 2600 t of fish were produced, for a turnover of 165 MFF: This very technical activity is developing, but still fragile and risky. Environment protection regulation applied to marine fish farming directly inspires from that in force in fresh water, which comes from the industry: i.e. the so-called "classified installation" regulation, concerning activities likely to produce polluting effluents. It does not really adapt to diluted effluents, like fish growing ones, and still less to marine farming; this is true for parameters like biological oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COB) and, to a lesser extent, for... |

After the decision taken by the French - South African committee to reduce the budget and the duration of all the selected proposaIs of the first call, Rhodes University and Ifremer decided to revise their joint proposaI and organized a meeting in South Africa in february 1998. A multidisciplinary team composed of economists and specialists in different fields of aquaculture spent on week in South Africa (9 and 15 february 1998) with Prof Hecht and his team in Rhodes University, in order to precise the proposaI and define detailed actions to be carried out within the next two years. The present report summarises the principal conclusions of the survey in term of general approach, detailed methodologies and planning for 1998. |

Aquaculture in France is characterised by great species diversity. Furthermore, traditional activities (farming of marine shellfish and freshwater fish) coexist with still-developing recent ones (marine fish farming, new pratices in shellfish rearing, etc.). Traditional cultures are the main contributors to the tonnage produced and employment generated. Another noticeable point is the importance of the western part of the country, which carries the main part of the production (> 80 %): the Channel Atlantic coast for shellfish, and nearby rivers for freshwater salmonid farming. On the Mediterranean coast, marine fish farming of bass and bream, as well as shellfish production by new methods (mussels on longlines in open waters), are developing. Important... |
