Simulating vertical mixing in a shelf-break region: addition of a shear instability model, accounting for the overall effect of internal tides, on top of a one-dimensional turbulence closure mixed layer model ArchiMer

A simple parameterization of eddy diffusivity is used to simulate the shear mixing from tidally induced internal waves generated in the continental slope region southwest of Brittany. Near the edge of the shelf, the seasonal thermocline oscillates under the forcing of the barotropic tide which propagates over the shelf break. A composite model is constructed to simulate the mixing of the upper ocean from both external (wind stress) and internal (internal waves) sources. A simple one-dimensional eddy kinetic energy model, which predicts the temperature profile from heat flux and wind stress inputs, is validated with respect to regional hydroelimatic conditions, then coupled with a two-layer model of non-linear internal waves, to simulate the mixing...

Satellite-based indicator of zooplankton distribution for global monitoring ArchiMer

This study investigates the association between an index of mesozooplankton biomass, derived from the Continuous Plankton Recorder survey and satellite-derived productivity fronts in the North Atlantic. While chlorophyll-a content (CHL) is commonly described as a proxy for phytoplankton biomass, the size of productivity fronts estimated from the horizontal gradient of CHL appears to be directly linked to mesozooplankton biomass. Our results suggest that the lifespan of productivity fronts, which ranges from weeks to months, meets the time requirement of mesozooplankton to develop. Potential feeding and spawning habitats of Atlantic bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer

Atlantic bluefin tuna Thunnus thynnus (ABFT) is a fish of high market value which has recently become strongly overexploited, notably in the Mediterranean Sea. This area is an essential habitat for ABFT reproduction and growth. We present here an approach for deriving the daily mapping of potential ABFT feeding and spawning habitats based on satellite-derived sea surface temperature (SST) and chl a concentration. The feeding habitat was mainly derived from the simultaneous occurrence of oceanic fronts of temperature and chl a content while the spawning habitat was mostly inferred from the heating of surface waters. Towards the implementation of an integrated ecosystem fleet-based management of European fisheries ArchiMer

Using the Celtic Sea and the North Sea as case studies, the fleet-based approach is shown to be the pathway to implement an effective ecosystem approach to fisheries management (EAFM) in European seas. First, a diagnostic on the health of each ecosystem is proposed based on the reconstruction of long time-series of catch, the analysis of mean indicators or stocks trajectories derived from ICES stock assessment results, and the analysis of ecosystem indicators. Then, a fleet-based synthesis is presented using indicators of both the ecological impact and the economic performances of the major fleets operating within each ecosystem. Modelling of European hake nurseries in the Mediterranean Sea: an ecological niche approach ArchiMer

An ecological niche modelling (ENM) approach was developed to model the suitable habitat 36 for the 0-group European hake, Merluccius merluccius L., 1758, in the Mediterranean Sea. 37 The ENM was built combining knowledge on biological traits of hake recruits (e.g. growth, 38 settlement, mobility and feeding strategy) with patterns of selected ecological variables 39 (chlorophyll-a fronts and concentration, bottom depth, sea bottom current and temperature) 40 to highlight favourable nursery habitats. An ecological niche modelling (ENM) approach was used to predict the potential feeding and spawning habitats of small (5-25kg, only feeding) and large (> 25kg) Atlantic bluefin tuna (ABFT), Thunnus thynnus, in the Mediterranean Sea, the North Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico. Scaling of coastal phytoplankton features by optical remote sensors: comparison with a regional ecosystem model ArchiMer

Different scales of hydrological and biological patterns of the Bay of Biscay are assessed using space-borne and airborne optical remote sensing data, field measurements and a 3-dimensional biophysical model. If field measurements provide accurate values on the vertical dimension, ocean colour data offer frequent observations of surface biological patterns at various scales of major importance for the validation of ecosystem modelling.
