Maintaining shellfish production activities, ensuring their quality and optimising the management of reserved space use with a perspective of sustainable growth are questions that interest a very significant block of French coastal sites. To achieve such objectives, it must especially be possible to relate the spatial distribution of the farmed stocks and environmental constraints: physical characteristics of the environment, nutritive resources, health constraints, environmental protection constraints... |

This paper describes a method that refers to the integration of analogic data of an Atlantic salt marsh atlas into a GIS. So the steps of the method are developed after a description of the original data sources in the form of analogic thematic cartography and associated text. They include digitalization, geometric corrections, topology and attributes definition, hotlinks setting up between graphics, texts and images, information layers crossing and spatial analyses. Four main results are presented and discussed: (a) the atlas digital form presentation, (b) objects selection and theme surface computation in the case of salt exploitation, (c) salt marsh identification versus inland fresh water marshes, (d) intersection between digital atlas objects and... |

This paper presents a set of solutions based on the synergy between GIS and a numerical model to help in diagnosis and decision making for water quality related matters. After an overview of the model features, it describes the computer interface (ModelView) implemented as an extension of the Arc View (ESRI) GIS System to provide operational data communication between the model and the GIS in vector or raster form. The paper particularly focuses on changes in the quality of coastal waters from river discharges. It looks at the spatio-temporal representation of this behaviour and the spatial analysis of sensitive areas that can be impacted. Examples are given of a French coastal area subject to strong human pressure, i.e. marine cultures and recreational... |
