The Evolving Ethanol Industry in the United States AgEcon
Eidman, Vernon R..
This paper discusses the likely growth in the production of ethanol from grain in the United States over the next 4 to 5 years. It describes how the costs of production have changed and some of the major factors that are likely to impact profitability and rate of growth in the industry over this period. It discusses co-product production and utilization, and the impact of expanding ethanol production on land use. The final section briefly discusses recent progress in the production of liquid fuels from cellulose.

The Role of Information Technology in the Fuel Ethanol Industry AgEcon
Dunn, John R.; Caswell, Margriet; Crooks, Tony; Eidman, Vernon R.; Hrubovcak, James; Shapouri, Hosein; Richman, Scott; Scott, Tom.
This USDA-sponsored study uses panels of ethanol industry experts and follow up interviews with plant owners and managers to examine how information technology has impacted the structure, organization, and operations of the fuel ethanol industry. The study examined the following questions regarding the future of the ethanol industry: (1) Does the present ethanol industry represent a stable structure or a transitional step toward an inevitable concentration of ownership into the hands of a few large processing firms? (2) Have contemporary information technologies fundamentally changed the information flows, scale of operations, access to markets, conditions of vertical and horizontal coordination, sources of finance, and the competitive landscape for the...

AN EMPIRICAL TEST OF THE INTERVAL APPROACH FOR ESTIMATING RISK PREFERENCES AgEcon
Wilson, Paul N.; Eidman, Vernon R..
Previous attempts to measure agricultural decision makers' risk preferences have obtained values of the Arrow-Pratt coefficient in the range of approximately -.0002 to .0012. The recently developed interval approach for elicitation of risk preferences was used to estimate risk attitudes for Minnesota swine producers. Constant and decreasing absolute risk aversion were predominant among the sample. Seventy-eight percent of the respondents were in the Arrow-Pratt interval of -.0002 to .0003. A discriminant analysis using producer attributes and three estimated risk intervals concluded that 50 percent of the respondents could be classified in the correct risk interval.

AN ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF LOW INVESTMENT SWINE PRODUCTION SYSTEMS AgEcon
Weldon, Richard N.; Eidman, Vernon R.; Jacobson, Larry D..
This publication summarizes an evaluation of smaller and lower investment swine production systems. The systems analyzed range from pasture operations with production during the warmer months to rather intense year-round use of remodeled buildings. In each case the system emphasizes use of facilities that can be constructed and remodeled by the farm operator. The report includes one section for each type of hog production: feeder pig production, farrow-to-finish operations and hog finishing.

COMPENSATING IRRIGATORS FOR RESTRICTING WATER USE: AN EXPECTED UTILITY ANALYSIS AgEcon
Bosch, Darrell J.; Eidman, Vernon R.; Gill, Eric E..
A daily limitation on the number of hours irrigators can pump may be imposed by utility companies seeking to use the company's generating capacity more efficiently. Three power interruption patterns are analyzed to determine electricity cost reductions which would have to be offered to keep irrigators from being made worse off by the interruptions. Irrigation system pumping capacity and the irrigator's attitudes toward risk are found to be primary determinants of the size of the required reductions.
