Her viser nye undersøgelser, at placering af gylle direkte under kammen øger N-optagelse i afgrøden. |

Increasing subsoil organic carbon inputs could potentially mitigate climate change by sequestering atmospheric CO2. Yet, microbial turnover and stabilization of labile carbon in subsoils are regulated by complex mechanisms including the availability of nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), and sulfur (S). The present study mimicked labile organic carbon input using a versatile substrate (i.e. glucose) to address the interaction between carbon-induced mineralization, N-P-S availability, and microbial physiology in topsoil and subsoils from a temperate agricultural sandy loam soil. A factorial incubation study (42 days) showed that net losses of added carbon in topsoil were constant, whereas carbon losses in subsoils varied according to nutrient treatments. Glucose... |

The potential for N2O emissions outside the main growing season may be influenced by long-term effects of cropping system. This was investigated by collecting intact soil cores (100 cm3, 0-4 cm depth) under winter wheat in three organic cropping systems and a conventional reference within a long-term crop rotation experiment. Average annual inputs of C in crop residues and manure ranged from 1.7 to 3.3 Mg ha-1. A simulated freeze-thaw cycle resulted in a flush of CO2 during the first 48 h, which could be mainly from microbial sources. Other samples were adjusted to approximately –10, -30 or –100 hPa and amended with excess 15NO3- prior to freezing and thawing. Denitrification was the main source of N2O during a 72-h incubation at 22C, as judged from N2O... |

Band-steaming of arable soil at 80–90 °C kill off weed seeds prior to crop establishment which allows an extensive intra-row weed control. Here we evaluated the side-effects of in situ band-steaming on soil respiration, enzyme activities, and numbers of culturable bacteria and fungi in an organic field soil. The results showed that mechanical disturbance created by band-steaming could be neglected as a mediator of microbial changes. Also, soil pH and water content was unaffected by band-steaming. Effects of band-steaming on in situ soil respiration and basal respiration, respectively, were insignificant or slightly stimulatory (P < 0.05). Fluorescein diacetate hydrolysis and arylsulfatase activity were significantly (P < 0.001) inhibited by 25 and... |

Steaming of narrow soil bands prior to sowing is a new technique that reduces the need for intra-row weeding in herbicide-free row crops. However, the steam treatment may eliminate both weed seeds and non-target soil organisms, thereby affecting the nutrient cycling in the soil. This study tested the effect of band-steaming on N and C dynamics in a sandy loam soil that was steamed in situ to maximal temperatures of 70–90°C using a prototype bandsteamer. Soil samples (0–5 cm depth) were collected during 90 days from band-steamed soil, undisturbed control soil, and control soil treated just mechanically with the bandsteamer. In the steamed soil, ammonium concentrations increased from 1.1 to 20.3 μg NH4+-N g−1 dry weight during 28 days. This coincided with... |

Aims Mechanisms of subsoil carbon sequestration from deep-rooted plants are elusive, but may contribute to climate change mitigation. This study addressed the role of root chemistry on carbon mineralization and microbiology in a temperate agricultural subsoil (60 and 300 cm depth)compared to topsoil (20 cm depth). Methods Roots from different plant species were chemically characterized and root-induced CO2 production was measured in controlled soil incubations (20 weeks). Total carbon losses, β-glucosidase activity, carbon substrate utilization, and bacterial gene copy numbers were determined. After 20 weeks, resultant carbon mineralization responses to mineral nitrogen (N) were tested. Results Root-induced carbon losses were significantly lower in... |
