The supply of protein and essential amino acids will undoubtedly be a great challenge for European poultry nutritionists when the transition to 100% organic feed ingredients for organic poultry production becomes reality. To avoid costly and energy consuming oversea transports connected to the import of soya beans, much research effort has focussed on the exploitation of alternative locally grown protein sources to increase the sustainability of organic production systems. Besides the cultivation of protein crops like legumes (peas, lupin, and faba been) and seeds (sunflower, rapeseed), new approaches including the feeding of protein concentrates from green biomass obtained by bio-refinement are discussed. At present, many of the alternative protein... |

In a feeding trial 450 layer chickens were fed either of 3 isoenergetic diets supplemented with different fish meal, grounded fly meal (Musca domestica) or fly meal and fresh fly larvae. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of feeding grounded fly larva to layer chickens as an alternative protein source for fish meal in organic poultry. Parameters investigated were weight gain, food consumption, animal behavior and study whether it would have effect on intestinal health. |

The aim of the study was to evaluate mussel meal and starfish meals as protein sources for organic layers by studying the effect on production performance, nutrient digestibility and egg quality. A total of 300 Hisex white laying hens (20-week old) were distributed randomly to 6 dietary treatment groups, each with five replicates, including a control diet providing fish meal, 3 diets providing mussel meal (4, 8 and 12 g/100 g) and 2 diets providing starfish meal (4 and 8 g/100 g). Laying rate, egg mass, feed conversion ratio, mortality and live weight of the hens did not differ among treatments. The egg weight was not different from the egg weights of control diets, but the inclusion of 4 g mussel meal resulted in a lower (P < 0.05) egg weight than 8 g... |
