The Patagonian grenadier Macruronus magellanicus fishery reached the maximum exploitation in the argentine fishery in 1988 with a catch of 154,960 t, decreasing gradually in the current decade. Statistical data confirm this trend and consider a total catch of22,796,3 t for 1995. The regulations establish a minimum of 120 mm inside codend mesh size for demersal species in Argentine sea. Hoki,in relation to the fishing gear, shows a semipelagic behaviour, but no selectivity trials were made at the moment. A practical and simple technique which gives an aproximate solution to the determination of minimum length of warp payed out durin a demersal or botto,m trawl operation es proposed. The method takes into account such variables as: weight in the water of warp payed out, of the otter board an the maximum trawling speed determined for each vessel in particular. The FRS "Dr. E.L. Holmberg" of the National Institute for Scientific Research and Development (INIDEP, Mar del Plata)was used to test the method.

Major results and difficulties which resulted from experiences in species and per size selectivity for the Argentine fishery are described. Codend selectivity and grid sorting devices trials were carried out. The use of grids not only reduced by-catch of hake in the shrimp fishery but also improved juveniles selectivity in the hake fishery as compared to mesh selectivity. No changes in fishing gears or in fishing manoeuvres were necessary. It was concluded that, to achieve a better rational exploitation of fishing resources, it is necessary to enhance selectivity of fishing gears. Deeper knowledge and further training of crews on Argentine fleets is also encouraged.

This Technical Manual has been developed to frame, assemble and apply the single grid sorting device (DEJUPA). It is addressed to professionals, technicians in fishing gears, skippers, owners and fishermen. The Manual presents three DEJUPA sizes in function of the main engine power: less than 300 HP, between 300 and 800 HP and more than 800 HP.

This paper deals with the design and application of different fishing gears tested in the Beagle Channel (Tierra del Fuego, Argentina) with the supervision of the technical personnel of INIDEP Fishing Gear Group, the support of the General Directorate of Natural Resources (known today as SRNyAH) of Tierra del Fuego, Antártida e Islas del Atlántico Sur Province and the participation of local fishermen. Activities started as a result of an agreement between the INIDEP and the SRNyAH ratified in 1994. This work reports on the inter rod distance in a single sorting grid adapted for the escape of hake juveniles. A good performance of the device was reported due to the DEJUPA trials carried out in April 1997. In may 1998 a new survey with DEJUPA was carrie out with 30 mm, 33 mm, and 40 mm separation distance bars, in order to optimise the escape of the species at first length maturity (35 cm). Selectivity curves with maximum likelihood method were obtained for each inter rod distance being the length at 50. (L50) 29, 32 and 37 respectively. Some trials were made to find the substituting fishing method for bottom trawling to exploit the goundfishes in the Argentine Sea, especially those on the untrawlable grounds. The high sea bottom longlinning is one of the most prospective methods for this purpose. The present report dealt with the results of the trials of the bottom linglining conducted by the Koei-Maru n° 10, a Japanese commercial high sea bottom longliner of unique design, during the period from Oct. 25 to Dec.13 in 1987 along the outer edge of the continental shelf of the latitudes of 40 to 50 degrees south.

The hake, Merluccius hubbsi, fishery is the most important amongst the argentinean demersal fisheries. Fishery management schemes have been adopted to control high discard levels of undersized fish historically observed in the fishery. Controls have consissted in establishing closed areas to fishing and implementation of minimum mesh size in bottom trawls to allow escapement of fish less than 33 cm in length. Offical fishery regulations establish a 120 mm inside codend mesh size in all hake traws. Bathymetric changes in groundfish catch composition are analyzed, on the basis of routine reports of 106 bottom longline strings. The project was conducted from 12 December 1986 to 29 November 1987, covering areas from coastal waters to the outer shelf of the continental shelf off Argentina from 36° to 55°S. As a preliminary step to the analysis, the validity of each factor as probable explanatory variable in each area, was analyzed with consideration as to their range and variation.
