Local Food Impacts on Health and Nutrition AgEcon
Ferrer, Myra Clarisse R.; Fonsah, Esendugue Greg; Ramirez, Octavio A.; Escalante, Cesar L..
Prevalence of local foods is believed to answer several food issues one of which is health and nutrition. This study focused on the on the availability of local foods to consumers and see its relationship with two specific diet-related diseases namely, obesity and diabetes. Other variables were included in the analysis to provide additional evidence to previous findings. Factors considered are divided into 5 groups namely diet-, local food-, environment-, education- and gender-related factors. Diet- and environment-related variables provide the most perceptive findings while local food variables provided significant however weak evidence of positive impacts to health and nutrition.

Foreign Workers and the Organic Farms’ Demand for Seasonal Unskilled Labor AgEcon
Wu, Ya; Escalante, Cesar L.; Perkins, Samuel L.; Neely, Carrie E..
This study analyzes farm labor management strategies of organic farms by employing Heckan selection model. Econometric results present interesting relationships between foreign worker-related variables and the hiring of non-family seasonal part-time workers. First, the extent of hiring is inversely related to the population of illegal residents. Second, the outcome variable (extent of hiring) is directly related to the number of H2A permits (foreign guest farm worker visas for temporary, contractual work) issued. The results also indicate that higher wages, corporate farms, and more educated, younger and full-time farm operators are associated with greater tendencies to hire non-family seasonal part-time workers. Family labor is used to supplement the...

Feasible Fumigant-Herbicide System Alternatives to Methyl Bromide for Bell Pepper Producers AgEcon
Byrd, Mark M.; Escalante, Cesar L.; Fonsah, Esendugue Greg; Wetzstein, Michael E..
With the current methyl bromide (MeBr) system for producing Georgia’s peppers being phased out, alternative fumigant and herbicide systems for producers are analyzed. Using stochastic dominance analyses, two alternatives exceeding MeBr’s yield and financial efficiency were identified. A programming model, incorporating simulation-optimization techniques, generated optimal production and financial plans. Results indicate potential economic viability under alternative systems vis-à-vis the traditional MeBr production system. The Telone II and Chloropicrin combination with Metham potassium may offer a viable substitute for MeBr.

RISK BALANCING IN AN INTEGRATED FARM RISK MANAGEMENT PLAN AgEcon
Escalante, Cesar L.; Barry, Peter J..
Using optimization techniques in a simulation framework, this study demonstrates the synergy between risk balancing and alternative strategies in effectively reducing risk under changing farm conditions. Highly risk-averse farmers tend to prefer integrated risk-management plans, based on the diversification principle, that yield offsetting combinations of the risk-reducing benefits of most strategies and the profit-generating capacities of the others. The greater appeal of a more diversified plan usually downplays the risk balancing strategy as the farm utilizes credit reserves to implement other production and marketing plans considered essential to overall risk reduction. The farm, however, still realizes overall, although more regulated, reduction in...

Credit Risk Assessment and Racial Minority Lending at the Farm Service Agency AgEcon
Escalante, Cesar L.; Brooks, Rodney L.; Epperson, James E.; Stegelin, Forrest E..
The nature of credit risk assessment and basis of loan approval decisions of the Farm Service Agency are analyzed in the aftermath of the black farmers’ 1997 class action suit against the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This study did not uncover convincing evidence of racial discrimination against nonwhite borrowers under a binomial logistic framework based on the probability of a loan application’s approval. Moreover, the collective use of more stringent and objective credit-scoring measures usually employed by commercial lenders is less evident in the Farm Service Agency’s evaluation of loan applications.

Farm-Level Evidence on the Sustainable Growth Paradigm from Grain and Livestock Farms AgEcon
Escalante, Cesar L.; Turvey, Calum G.; Barry, Peter J..
This study uses the sustainable growth rate model to investigate, measure, and analyze sustainable growth rates and trends for Illinois farmers. Results of farm-level econometric analyses indicate the relevance of the sustainable growth paradigm in explaining most farm financial decisions made each year. Grain farms have shown a greater tendency to balance growth through adjustments in production efficiencies while livestock farms rely more on financial leveraging strategies. In general, our results have shown that the farm sector has adapted to positive or negative sustainable growth challenges consistent with the Higgins' model and that, from an equilibrium point of view, countercyclical measures of the sustainable growth challenge indicate that there...

Equilibrium of Land Values from Agricultural and General Economic Factors for Cropland and Pasture Capitalization in Georgia AgEcon
Flanders, Archie; White, Fred C.; Escalante, Cesar L..
Nonagricultural factors impact land values to cause a divergence of discounted cash rents for agricultural land and land values in Georgia. General economic factors are represented by per capita income in nonmetro areas. Cash rents for cropland and pasture have positive impacts on land values. Nonagricultural factors are stronger influences on land values than are cash rents. Greater effective demand exists for pasture than for cropland because pasture is subject to relatively more pricing pressure in northern counties with higher incomes and population. Increased land values have led to increased net wealth for Georgia agricultural producers.

FARM-LEVEL EVIDENCE ON THE RISK BALANCING HYPOTHESIS FROM ILLINOIS GRAIN FARMS AgEcon
Escalante, Cesar L.; Barry, Peter J..
This study provides farm-level empirical support to the Risk-Balancing Hypothesis using Illinois grain farm data. The econometric results indicate that risk-balancing farmers comprise more than half of the sample. These farmers tend to be older, have higher leasing ratios, are less financially efficient and manage risk through crop specialization, enterprise diversification, and marketing strategies in addition to risk balancing.

Weather Cycles, Production Yields and Georgia's Muscadine AgEcon
Raghunathan, Uthra; Wong, Jonathan; Escalante, Cesar L..
This paper looks at the relationship between weather, crop yield, and market price of muscadines using a dynamic panel data that spans from the 2000 to 2005 and across the state of Georgia. We use a Generalized Methods of Moments technique to estimate the impact of weather on the price of muscadines with the yield per acre as the instrumented variable. The results suggest that there is a relationship between the price and weather for muscadines, which provide important implications for the potential relevance of a weather derivative for muscadine production.

SHARE TENANCY, OWNERSHIP STRUCTURE, AND PREVENTED PLANTING CLAIMS IN CROP INSURANCE AgEcon
Rejesus, Roderick M.; Escalante, Cesar L.; Lovell, Ashley C..
A theoretical model based on opportunity cost and expected utility principles establishes linkages between the likelihood of prevented planting claims in crop insurance, existing share leasing arrangements and internal farm business structures. Results of probit estimation procedures indicate that simpler internal business structures and a more dominant farmer-tenant leasing position can increase the probability of submitting a prevented planting claim.
