Impact of natural (waves and currents) and anthropogenic (trawl) resuspension on the export of particulate matter to the open ocean Application to the Gulf of Lion (NW Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Ferre, B; De Madron, X; Estournel, C; Ulses, C; Le Corre, Gildas.
Modern sediment deposits on continental margins form a vast reservoir of particulate matter that is regularly affected by resuspension processes. Resuspension by bottom trawling on shelves with strong fishing activity can modify the scale of natural disturbance by waves and currents. Recent field data show that the impact of bottom trawls on fine sediment resuspension per unit surface is comparable with that of the largest storms. We assessed the impact of both natural and anthropogenic processes on the dispersal of riverborne particles and shelf sediments on the Gulf of Lion shelf. We performed realistic numerical simulations of resuspension and transport forced by currents and waves or by a fleet of bottom trawlers. Simulations were conducted for a...

The FETCH experiment: An overview - art. no. 8053 ArchiMer
Hauser, Danièle; Branger, H; Bouffies Cloche, S; Despiau, S; Drennan, W; Dupuis, H; Durand, P; De Madron, X; Estournel, C; Eymard, L; Flamant, C; Graber, H; Guerin, C; Kahma, K; Lachaud, G; Lefevre, J; Pelon, J; Petterson, H; Piguet, B; Queffeulou, Pierre; Tailliez, D; Tournadre, Jean; Weill, A.
The "flux, etat de la mer, et tele'de'tection en conditions de fetch variable'' (FETCH) was aimed at studying the physical processes associated with air-sea exchanges and mesoscale oceanic circulation in a coastal region dominated by frequent strong offshore winds. The experiment took place in March-April 1998 in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea (Gulf of Lion). Observations were collected with the R/V L'Atalante, with an air-sea interaction spar (ASIS) buoy, with waverider buoys, and with research aircraft equipped for in situ and remote sensing measurements. The present paper is an introduction to the following special section, which groups 12 papers (including this one) presenting results on turbulent flux measurements at the ocean surface, on the...

Three-dimensional modelling of wave-induced current from the surf zone to the inner shelf ArchiMer
Michaud, H; Marsaleix, P; Leredde, Y.; Estournel, C; Bourrin, F.; Lyard, Florent; Mayet, Clement; Ardhuin, Fabrice.
We develop and implement a new method to take into account the impact of waves into the 3-D circulation model SYMPHONIE (Marsaleix et al., 2008, 2009a) following the simplified equations of Bennis et al. (2011), which use glm2z-RANS theory (Ardhuin et al., 2008c). These adiabatic equations are completed by additional parameterizations of wave breaking, bottom friction and wave-enhanced vertical mixing, making the forcing valid from the surf zone through to the open ocean. The wave forcing is performed by wave generation and propagation models WAVEWATCH III (R) (Tolman, 2008, 2009; Ardhuin et al., 2010) and SWAN (Booij et al., 1999). The model is tested and compared with other models for a plane beach test case, previously tested by Haas and Warner (2009)...

The penetration of the Northern Current over the Gulf of Lions (Mediterranean) as a downscaling problem ArchiMer
Auclair, F; Marsaleix, P; Estournel, C.
Coastal shelf models suffer from the difficulty of specifying both the initial field and the external circulation at the open boundary. Only basin scale models can have the right space-time variability to routinely provide such information. Do facto, such models have however a coarser resolution than the coastal model and the downscaling of the circulation to the high resolution grid is biased. Indeed the models are not necessarily based on the same physics and the interactions of the general circulation with the topography, in particular over the shelf break region, arc generally not correctly represented on the large-scale grid. Studying the response of the Northern Current to the atmospheric forcing in the region of Marseille (France) and its...
