Protocoles d'extraction chimique de la matière organique particulaire : application au domaine estuarien ArchiMer
Etcheber, H.; Heral, Maurice; Relaxans, J. C..
There are several bio geochemical methods of studying particulate organic matter (0,45-300 µm). The main techniques employed are described ; special attention has been paid to extractive processes (chemical attack of samples and study of extracted fraction). Although these techniques are simple, various difficulties can arise : results obtained by various authors cannot be compared when techniques used differ. Furthermore the environmental interpretation of extracted functions is not always very clear. Extractive methods, which most often use harsh chemical extractants, do not provide accurate measurements of the importance of labile organic fraction. We propose therefore a series of chemical attacks of increasing strength and a correlation of results...

Leaf litter degradation in highly turbid transitional waters: preliminary results from litter-bag experiments in the Gironde Estuary ArchiMer
Fuentes-cid, A.; Chauvet, E.; Etcheber, H.; De-oliveira, E.; Sottolichio, Aldo; Schmidt, S..
The rates of decomposition of oak (Quercus robur) leaves have been examined using litter bags in a very high turbidity macrotidal estuary, the Gironde Estuary (S.W. France). The first experiments show a marked decrease in the decomposition rate of oak leaves at the water-sediment interface (mud-contact: anoxic conditions, reduced physical fragmentation) in comparison to the water column. The results point out the impact of hydrodynamic conditions on leaf litter degradation in such fluvio-estuarine systems. Regarding the aquatic-terrestrial linkage, our observations suggest direct changes in leaf decomposition kinetics and then, a potential delay on the recycling and transport processes of coarse particulate organic matter, especially in a context of...

Monitoring water quality in estuarine environments: lessons from the MAGEST monitoring program in the Gironde fluvial-estuarine system ArchiMer
Etcheber, H.; Schmidt, S.; Sottolichio, Aldo; Maneux, E.; Chabaux, G.; Escalier, J. -m.; Wennekes, H.; Derriennic, H.; Schmeltz, M.; Quemener, Loic; Repecaud, Michel; Woerther, Patrice; Castaing, P..
The Gironde Estuary, one of the largest European ones, presents temporary low dissolved oxygen content in its fluvial section close to the Bordeaux urban area. In a context of population growth and of long-term environmental changes, the development of a high-frequency monitoring programme of the fluvial-estuarine system of the Gironde, called MAGEST (MArel Gironde ESTuary), had appeared essential to address current and future water-quality issues/evaluations. The objectives of the MAGEST survey program are to establish a reference database to improve the knowledge of the Gironde Estuary functioning, encompassing the aspects of hydrology, sediment dynamics and biogeochemistry. Through examples of results from intratidal to seasonal time scales, we...

Spectrofluorimétrie de substances humiques provenant d'eaux d'estuaire. Etat des observations avec cette méthodologie ArchiMer
Ewald, M.; Belin, C.; Berger, P.; Etcheber, H..
This preliminary work on the waters of the Gironde estuary demonstrates that the humic substances can be identified by spectrofluorimetry, either in a dissolved state (direct measurement) or in a particulate state after chemical extraction. These humic substances from the Gironde estuary show fluorescence spectra typical of a terrigenous material, compared to those obtained with an indigenous marine (deep water sediments from the Orgon IV expedition).
