The Impact of the Crude Oil Price on the Livestock Sector under a Regime of Integrated Energy and Grain Markets AgEcon
Fabiosa, Jacinto F..
The study finds that the emergence and expansion of the ethanol sector was associated with a fundamental transformation of the integration of the energy and agricultural sectors. In particular, the correlation structure between crude oil and grain prices increased dramatically, becoming more statistically significant, and with all anomalous signs corrected. Before the ethanol boom, the correlation of the crude oil price and corn was -0.117. It increased to 0.876 in the ethanol boom period. Soymeal correlation increased from 0.182 to 0.909, and distillers dried grains with solubles increased from -0.252 to 0.834. As a result, the energy market is also now impacting the livestock sector through feed costs, which account for more than half of total costs....

Growing Demand for Animal-Protein-Source Products in Indonesia: Trade Implications AgEcon
Fabiosa, Jacinto F..
New elasticities were estimated from Indonesia's 1996, 1999, and 2002 National Socio-Economic Survey, or SUSENAS, data using a double-hurdle demand specification. The estimates suggest that major changes in Indonesian household diets are expected in the coming years, as income growth is sustained and as urbanization proceeds at a fast pace. The consumption 'trading-up' pattern for animal-protein source products observed in many countries may also occur in Indonesia. In this particular case, households will shift from fish to dairy and meat products. The trade impacts of this emerging consumption pattern will be determined by the cost of adjustment in Indonesia's domestic productive capacity and the influence of the country's predominantly Islamic tradition.

Distillers Dried Grain Product Innovation and Its Impact on Adoption, Inclusion, Substitution, and Displacement Rates in a Finishing Hog Ration AgEcon
Fabiosa, Jacinto F..
This study finds that the use of distillers dried grain with solubles (DDGS) as feed is greatly influenced by the development of DDGS products that are available in the market. We find that newer-generation DDGS products have a higher optimal inclusion rate, reaching the maximum allowable rate of 20% for swine, and they have a higher displacement rate of 0.23 for soymeal and 0.93 for corn. Although both traditional and newer-generation DDGS products are primarily used as a corn substitute for energy, it will take only a relatively small change in the price or matrix A (or both) for the newer-generation DDGS to primarily substitute for soymeal for the limiting amino acid, lysine. In contrast, traditional DDGS products have a lower optimal inclusion rate of...

Usefulness of Incomplete Demand Model in Censored Demand System Estimation AgEcon
Fabiosa, Jacinto F.; Jensen, Helen H..
The popularity of AIDS may not easily extend to censored demand systems. We propose an incomplete demand system that has relatively few restrictions on the parameter space, but preserves its theoretical consistency and apply this model to Indonesian data that have significant proportion of censored observations.

Land Allocation Effects of the Global Ethanol Surge: Predictions from the International FAPRI Model AgEcon
Fabiosa, Jacinto F.; Beghin, John C.; Dong, Fengxia; Elobeid, Amani E.; Tokgoz, Simla; Yu, Tun-Hsiang (Edward).
We quantify the emergence of biofuel markets and its impact on U.S. and world agriculture for the coming decade using the multi-market, multi-commodity international FAPRI (Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute) model. The model incorporates the trade-offs between biofuel, feed, and food production and consumption and international feedback effects of the emergence through world commodity prices and trade. We examine land allocation by type of crop, and pasture use for countries growing feedstock for ethanol (corn, sorghum, wheat, sugarcane, and other grains) and major crops competing with feedstock for land resources such as oilseeds. We shock the model with exogenous changes in ethanol demand, first in the United States, then in Brazil, China,...

Household Welfare Cost of the Indonesian Macroeconomic Crisis AgEcon
Fabiosa, Jacinto F.; Jensen, Helen H.; Yan, Dong.
A theoretically consistent incomplete demand system is estimated to quantify the cost of the 1997 microeconomic crisis. Welfare cost per person was $128, which translates to $26.12 billion total cost. This amount is equivalent to agriculture's GDP contribution, and sufficient to pay for Indonesia's total annual government budget.

DO MACROECONOMIC SHOCKS IMPACT THE ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY OF SMALL FARMERS? THE CASE OF WETLAND RICE FARMERS IN INDONESIA AgEcon
Fabiosa, Jacinto F.; Jensen, Helen H.; Yan, Dong.
The economic efficiency of Indonesian rice farmers was lower and more variable during than before the macroeconomic crisis. Specifically, larger declines in technical efficiency were not offset by smaller improvements in allocative efficiency. Farm ownership, larger farm size, and higher education were associated with higher levels of efficiency.

A PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT OF THE BEEF SUBSECTOR IN THE PHILIPPINES AgEcon
Fabiosa, Jacinto F..
The average per capita protein consumption in the Philippines is very low, only 44.1 grams annually. This is primarily due both to the limited income of consumers and the inadequate supply of protein source products such as fish, pork, chicken, eggs, beef, and vegetables. The supply of protein source products from local sources has long been lagging behind the demand for domestic consumption. The reason for this is that expansion of the more traditional animal protein sources such as pork and chicken is severely constrained by the shortage of feed-grains and the strong competition for the use of the grains for direct human consumption. The short-run alternative adopted to solve the problem was to supplement local supply by importing meat and meat...

Impacts of the Economic Reform Program on the Performance of the Egyptian Agricultural Sector AgEcon
Soliman, Ibrahim; Fabiosa, Jacinto F.; Gaber Amer, Mohamed; Kandil, Siham.
From 1986 to 2007 Egypt’s agricultural policy transitioned from a tightly controlled to a more liberalized regime. This study examines the impact of this change on the performance of the wheat (imported grain) and rice (exported grain) sectors. In terms of profitability, we found that the cost of production increased substantially in both grains, driven primarily by the rise in land rent and labor wage. But the wheat and rice sectors’ profitability did not suffer significantly, as advances in new seed technologies and adoption of better farm practices including farm mechanization increased yield and compensated for the higher cost. Considering market efficiency, we found that over the study period the farmer’s share of the consumer’s expenditure...

Assessing China’s Potential Import Demand for Distillers Dried Grain: Implications for Grain Trade AgEcon
Fabiosa, Jacinto F.; Hansen, James M.; Matthey, Holger; Pan, Suwen; Tuan, Francis C..
A team of U.S. analysts visited China to assess the potential for use of distillers dried grain plus solubles (DDGS) in China’s livestock sector. They examined the economics of the use of DDGS in feeds, the policy issues surrounding the use of the product, and transportation-logistic constraints in the expansion of DDGS imports. The team collected actual and secondary data to conduct a micro-economic analysis of the impact of DDGS on feed cost, solicited official and expert opinions through interviews, and conducted site visits. They found the development of the DDGS import market in China to be very promising. The microeconomic analysis showed a clear economic incentive for feed millers and livestock producers to use DDGS in their feed ration, with a...

Economic Impact of a Ban on the Use of Over-the-Counter Antibiotics in U.S. Swine Rations AgEcon
Hayes, Dermot J.; Jensen, Helen H.; Backstrom, Lennart; Fabiosa, Jacinto F..
Antibiotic drugs are currently used in 90 percent of starter feeds, 75 percent of grower feeds, more than 50 percent of finishing feeds and at least 20 percent of sow feeds (USDA/APHIS). A ban on the use of feed-grade antibiotics would lead to changes in production processes and practices in production of pork, and hence would have an economic impact on the U.S. pork industry and pork market. This study considers the economic effects of a ban in pork production, with no change of regulation on other meats. The analysis uses a set of technical assumptions that are based in large part on a historical analysis of how the Swedish ban influenced the Swedish pork industry to anticipate the potential economic effects. A range of cases is examined. The cases use...

Impact of the South Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement on the U.S. Livestock Sector AgEcon
Fabiosa, Jacinto F.; Hayes, Dermot J.; Dong, Fengxia.
The recently signed Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (KORUS FTA) grants the U.S. livestock industry with preferential access to South Korea's import market. This study evaluates the likely impacts of the KORUS FTA on the U.S. livestock sector. Using the Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute's modeling system, we find that livestock prices increase by 0.5% to 3.8% under the agreement. And together with an expansion by 381 to 883 million pounds in meat exports, the value of U.S. exports increase by close to U.S.$2 billion, or a 15.2% increase. Because of differential baseline starting market shares and differential rates and staging specifications, the beef sector results are primarily driven by trade diversion impacts, while a combination of...

AN ANALYSIS OF THE PROPOSED DOHA ROUND MODALITIES AgEcon
Babcock, Bruce A.; Fabiosa, Jacinto F.; Matthey, Holger; Isik, Murat; Tokgoz, Simla; Elobeid, Amani E.; Hart, Chad E.; Full, Frank.
The Uruguay Round Agreement on Agriculture (URAA) provided a continuing mandate for progressive reforms to liberalize world agricultural markets. A new round of negotiation was put into motion in early 2000 and later formalized in what is now called the Doha Round. The Doha Round negotiation follows the same principle laid out in the URAA, with the introduction of three reform anchors: market access, export competition, and reduction of domestic support. This paper specifies the new schedule of commitments for each member country under the proposed modalities and assesses the potential market impacts of these changes for world agricultural markets. We specifically focus on grains, oilseeds, sugar, cotton, livestock, poultry, and dairy markets.

This paper was presented at the INTERNATIONAL TRADE IN LIVESTOCK PRODUCTS SYMPOSIUM in Auckland, New Zealand, January 18-19, 2001. The Symposium was sponsored by: the International Agricultural Trade Research Consortium, the Venture Trust, Massey University, New Zealand, and the Centre for Applied Economics and Policy Studies, Massey University. Dietary changes, especially in developing countries, are driving a massive increase in demand for livestock products. The objective of this symposium was to examine the consequences of this phenomenon, which some have even called a "revolution." How are dietary patterns changing, and can increased demands for livestock products be satisfied from domestic resources? If so, at what cost? What will be the flow-on...

ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF THE EXCHANGE RATE AND ITS VOLATILITY ON CANADIAN PORK AND LIVE SWINE EXPORTS TO THE UNITED STATES AND JAPAN AgEcon
Fabiosa, Jacinto F..
A model of a representative Canadian pork exporter is developed to examine the impacts of the exchange rate and its volatility on pork and live swine exports. The pork export supply equation is expressed as a function of the expected level of real exchange rate and a time-varying variance of real exchange rate. An AR(p) model is used to represent the expected real exchange rate, and a GARCH(p, q) model is used to generate the time-varying variance. The same model is used to examine the sensitivity of pork exports to Japan from Canada, the United States, and Denmark. The parameters of all pork and live swine export equations have theoretically consistent signs and many are significant. That is, the domestic price in the exporting country has a negative...
