Utilisation des minéraux sédimentaires argileux pour la reconstitution des variations paléoclimatiques à court terme en Mer d'Arabie ArchiMer
Fagel, N; Debrabant, P; Demenocal, P; Demoulin, B.
During the Late Neogene, the sediments of the Owen ridge (Arabian Sea) were able to record paleoclimatic variations because of tectonic stability and weak bio-turbation. These changes had a powerful influence on the western, northern and northeastern detrital supplies related to monsoon conditions and low-latitude aridity which developed during glaciary stages. In ODP Leg 117 sites, previous studies on the distribution of clay assemblages show a great variety of mineral origins and their fluctuating contribution to the Neogene sedimentation. Concurrent investigations of the sedimentological, magnetic, biogenic and geochemical properties of sediments have emphasized typical periodic sedimentary responses related to external forced functions of the earth's...

Nd and Pb isotope signatures of the clay-size fraction of Labrador Sea sediments during the Holocene: Implications for the inception of the modern deep circulation pattern ArchiMer
Fagel, N; Hillaire-marcel, C; Humblet, M; Brasseur, R; Weis, D; Stevenson, R.
Nd and Pb isotopes were measured on the fine fraction of one sediment core drilled off southern Greenland. This work aims to reconstruct the evolution of deep circulation patterns in the North Atlantic during the Holocene on the basis of sediment supply variations. For the last 12 kyr, three sources have contributed to the sediment mixture: the North American Shield, the Pan-African and Variscan crusts, and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Clay isotope signatures indicate two mixtures of sediment sources. The first mixture (12.2-6.5 ka) is composed of material derived from the North American shield and from a "young'' crustal source. From 6.5 ka onward the mixture is characterized by a young crustal component and by a volcanic component characteristic of the...

Ba distribution in surface Southern Ocean sediments and export production estimates ArchiMer
Fagel, N; Dehairs, F; Andre, L; Bareille, G; Monnin, C.
We present excess Ba (Baxs) data (i.e., total Ba corrected for lithogenic Ba) for surface sediments from a north-south transect between the Polar Front Zone and the northern Weddell Gyre in the Atlantic sector and between the Polar Front Zone and the Antarctic continent in the Indian sector. Focus is on two different processes that affect excess Ba accumulation in the sediments: sediment redistribution and excess Ba dissolution. The effect of these processes needs to be corrected for in order to convert accumulation rate into vertical rain rate, the flux component that can be linked to export production. In the Southern Ocean a major process affecting Ba accumulation rate is sediment focusing, which is corrected for using excess (230)Th. This correction,...
