Farmers in Low Socioeconomic Status Counties Enroll Less Land, Receive Less CRP Funding Per Acre AgEcon
Ueda, Kohei; Hand, Michael S.; Farrigan, Tracey L..
Participation in the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is associated with a number of farm and operator characteristics. But casual observation suggests that socioeconomic status is also correlated with program enrollment outcomes. This study examines the relationship between county-level socioeconomic status and participation patterns in CRP, while controlling for other factors that typically impact program enrollment. Result suggest that farms in low socioeconomic status counties are less likely to participate, enroll a smaller share of their land, and receive less per acre enrolled.

Dutko, Paula; Ver Ploeg, Michele; Farrigan, Tracey L..
Applying a census tract-level definition of food deserts, areas with limited access to affordable and healthy food, ERS has identified over 6,500 food desert tracts in the U.S. based on data from the 2000 Census of the Population. In this report, we examine the socioeconomic and demographic characteristics of these tracts to see how they differ from other tracts. We describe the demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of food desert census tracts compared with all other census tracts and how these tract characteristics have changed over time. Then, using multivariate logit analysis and data from the 1990 Census and 2000 Census, we attempt to isolate which characteristics separate food desert tracts from other low-income census tracts, to help...

Rural America Benefits From Expanded Use of the Federal Tax Code for Income Support AgEcon
Farrigan, Tracey L.; Durst, Ron L..
Over the past two decades, the Federal tax code increasingly has been used as a tool for achieving social and other policy objectives, primarily through the expanded use of tax credits. A larger share of rural taxpayers benefit from Federal tax policies aimed at lower income taxpayers because they have historically had lower incomes and higher poverty rates than urban households. The earned income and child tax credits have provided a substantial boost in income to low and middle-income rural taxpayers and have reduced the rural poverty rate.
