Écologie trophique des juvéniles de merlu (Merluccius merluccius) dans le golfe du Lion : Implications biologiques de la variabilité spatio-temporelle des ressources alimentaires exploitées dans les zones de nourricerie ArchiMer
Ferraton, Franck.
European hake (Merluccius merluccius) is a commercial and ecological important species in the Gulf of Lions. Juveniles are mainly located on the continental shelf, and abundance of smaller individuals (< 15 cm) is highest during spring in deeper areas principally. Juvenile hake (5 to 24 cm) density, relative condition factor, food resources and food web structure were investigated in four locations of the continental shelf (distributed with depth : shallow-deep, and distance from the Rhone river mouth : Rhone-Agde) during three springs (2002-2003-2004). Changes of food resources were identified with hake length, spatio-temporal variations were also observed for smaller juveniles (< 15 cm). Despite of hake prey diversity, the same organic source is at...

Spatio-temporal variation in diet may affect condition and abundance of juvenile European hake in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Ferraton, Franck; Harmelin Vivien, Mireille; Mellon-duval, Capucine; Souplet, Arnauld.
Variations in space and time of juvenile hake diet (5 to 19 cm total length, TL) were investigated in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean) and related to variation in C and N stable isotope ratios, condition and abundance. Crustaceans (mysids and euphausiids) dominated the diet of the smallest juvenile hake (5 to 9 cm. TL), and fishes (sardines and anchovies) of the largest juveniles (15 to 19 cm TL). The transition from a crustacean- to a fish-based diet occurred in medium-sized juveniles (10 to 14 cm TL), which preyed on both crustaceans and fishes (gobiids). These juveniles preyed on fishes when living in shallow waters (30 to 50 m), and crustaceans when located in deep waters (70 to 150 m). Although hake diet did not change over time in shallow waters...

Comparison of C and N stable isotope ratios between surface particulate organic matter and microphytoplankton in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean) ArchiMer
Harmelin Vivien, M; Loizeau, Veronique; Mellon-duval, Capucine; Beker, B; Arlhac, D; Bodiguel, Xavier; Ferraton, Franck; Hermand, R; Philippon, Xavier; Salen Picard, C.
Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios of particulate organic matter (POM) in surface water and 63-200 mu m-sized microphytoplankton collected at the fluorescence maximum were studied in four sites in the Gulf of Lions (NW Mediterranean), a marine area influenced by the Rhone River inputs, in May and November 2004. Some environmental (temperature, salinity) and biological (POM, Chlorophyll a and phaeopigments contents, phytoplankton biomass and composition) parameters were also analysed. Significantly different C and N isotopic signatures between surface water POM and microphytoplankton were recorded in all sites and seasons. Surface water POM presented systematically lower delta C-13 (similar to 4.2 parts per thousand) and higher delta N-15 (similar to...

Within-Generation Polygenic Selection Shapes Fitness-Related Traits across Environments in Juvenile Sea Bream ArchiMer
Rey, Carine; Darnaude, Audrey; Ferraton, Franck; Guinand, Bruno; Bonhomme, François; Bierne, Nicolas; Gagnaire, Pierre-alexandre.
Understanding the genetic underpinnings of fitness trade-o s across spatially variable environments remains a major challenge in evolutionary biology. In Mediterranean gilthead sea bream, first-year juveniles use various marine and brackish lagoon nursery habitats characterized by a trade-o between food availability and environmental disturbance. Phenotypic di erences among juveniles foraging in di erent habitats rapidly appear after larval settlement, but the relative role of local selection and plasticity in phenotypic variation remains unclear. Here, we combine phenotypic and genetic data to address this question. We first report correlations of opposite signs between growth and condition depending on juvenile habitat type. Then, we use single...
