Este estudo foi realizado no rio Ceará Mirim, Estado do Rio Grande do Norte. No local de coleta, este rio apresenta águas transparentes e predominância de macrófitas aquáticas nas margens. Este estudo teve como objetivos descrever os hábitos alimentares e verificar a existência de sobreposição alimentar na dieta de quatro espécies simpátricas de Cheirodontinae: Compsura heterura Eigenmann, 1915 (n= 452), Serrapinnus heterodon (Eigenmann, 1915) (n= 473), S. piaba (Lütken, 1875) (n= 509) e Serrapinnus sp. ABSTRACT Knowing the feeding biology of a population and its ontogenetic aspects can help in understanding the functioning of fish assemblages, essential to the conservation of the habitat biodiversity in which these species are found. Annual fishes complete their life cycle in temporary aquatic environments, existing in adult stage only for brief annual periods. The objective of this study was to identify the patterns of seasonal and diel variation and the most important abiotic factors that influence variation in the fish assemblage of the Delta of the Jacuí River in southern Brazil. Seventy-two samples were collected over a one year period. Water temperature was the abiotic factor with the greatest influence on the distribution of the assemblage. The structure of the assemblage exhibited significant changes in terms of species abundance and biomass during the year, with the greatest abundance and biomass being observed during the autumn. There was no significant difference between day and night in terms of abundance, but biomass was significantly greater during the night than during the day.

Biologia reprodutiva de Pachyurus bonariensis (Perciformes, Sciaenidae) na fase pré-represamento do arroio Taquarembó, Sul do Brasil

Este trabalho descreve aspectos da biologia reprodutiva de Pachyurus bonariensis (Steindachner, 1879) através da análise de 278 exemplares coletados de julho de 2006 a julho de 2007. O período reprodutivo estimado estendeu-se de outubro de 2006 a fevereiro de 2007 e mostrou uma correlação positiva com o fotoperíodo e a condutividade da água. O desenvolvimento oocitário foi sincrônico em mais de dois grupos, caracterizando uma desova do tipo parcelada. A fecundidade média absoluta foi de 39.313 oócitos e a fecundidade relativa foi de 0,43 oócitos por miligrama de peso total. The feeding biology of Steindachnerina brevipinna (Eigenmann & Eigenmann, 1889) is described based on specimens collected in the Ibicuí-Mirim river, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, from April 2001 to March 2002. Diet description is based on the analysis of the frequency of occurrence and index of dietary importance of the ingested items. The monthly variation of stomach repletion, hepatosomatic and intestinal indexes was also analyzed. Major feeding activity occurred before (May, June and July 2001) the reproductive period, with the hepatosomatic index values showing similar variation along the year. Both the mean intestinal quotient and the analysis of the main ingested items (Bacillariophyta and Chlorophyta algae) indicate a detritivorous diet.

The reproductive biology of a population of the weakly electric fish Brachyhypopomus draco from southern Brazil is described. Information is provided on the establishment of the reproductive period in this species and its relations with environmental and feeding factors, as well as on the absolute and relative fecundities, spawning type, sex ratio and sexual dimorphism. The reproductive period of Aphyocharax anisitsi is described through the analysis of specimens collected monthly from April 2001 to March 2002 in the arroio do Salso (3022'27"S, 5502'06"W), Rosário do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Specimens of Serrapinnus piaba were collected monthly from April 2001 to April 2002 in the rio Ceará Mirim, Rio Grande do Norte State, Brazil. The reproductive period, determined through the monthly variation of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and maturation stages, occurred from January to April. Non-parametric Spearman test was performed in order to test correlation of monthly GSI variation in males and females with water temperature, rainfall and day length. The diet of two populations of Mimagoniates rheocharis, from two freshwater streams of the rio Tramandaí, northeastern Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, are described and compared.
