An Estimation of Producer Preferences, and the Wage, Hours, and Gross Sales Effects of Migrant Labor in Alabama's Horticulture Industry AgEcon
Bellenger, Moriah; Fields, Deacue; Tilt, Ken.
Using 2002 survey data, this study employs log-linear regression analysis to examine the effects of migrant labor on wages, hours, and gross sales in Alabama's horticulture industry. A binomial probit model is added to measure producer decisions to hire migrant workers. The presence of migrant workers is found to raise average wages within green industry firms, but exhibits no significant effects on hours and sales.

ESTIMATING DEMAND FOR RECREATIONAL FISHING IN ALABAMA USING TRAVEL COST MODEL AgEcon
Ojumu, Oluwagbemiga; Hite, Diane; Fields, Deacue.
Individuals and households reveal their willingness to pay to enjoy environmental and natural resource services by engaging in outdoor recreation activities. The state of Alabama and the Black-Belt region possess significant recreational fishing resources whose qualities could be improved through public and private management innovations. To measure the value of such interventions, a baseline estimate of recreational fishing demand and potential for increasing the demand by on-site improvements needs to established. Using direct mail survey, count data obtained on individual angler characteristics, expenditures on fishing equipment, and destinations and expenditures on time and travel for each trip taken. In addition, the kinds and quantities of fish...

Economic Impact of the Alabama Green Industry 2003 to 2008: Grower Optimism in a Changing Economy AgEcon
Reynolds-Allie, Kenesha; Fields, Deacue.
Greenhouse and nursery contributes significantly to Alabama’s agricultural industry and the nation’s green industry. This industry represents the number one crop sector in Alabama agriculture and ranks 16th in the nation. This paper compared the 2003 and 2008 economic impact of the green industry in Alabama, which showed tremendous growth over the period. The paper also evaluated factors that influence grower optimism for future growth of their firm. It was found that the product type, percentage sales to different states and different wholesale marketing outlet had a significant impact on grower optimism.

Analysis of Cardinal and Ordinal Assumptions in Conjoint Analysis AgEcon
Harrison, R. Wes; Gillespie, Jeffrey M.; Fields, Deacue.
Of twenty-three agricultural economics conjoint analyses conducted between 1990 and 2001, seventeen used interval-rating scales, with estimation procedures varying widely. This study tests cardinality assumptions in conjoint analysis when interval-rating scales are used, and tests whether the ordered probit or two-limit tobit model is the most valid. Results indicate that cardinality assumptions are invalid, but estimates of the underlying utility scale for the two models do not differ. Thus, while the ordered probit model is theoretically more appealing, the two-limit tobit model may be more useful in practice, especially in cases with limited degrees of freedom, such as with individual-level conjoint models.

PRODUCER VALUATION OF HERD BULL CHARACTERISTICS AgEcon
Holt, John D.; Fields, Deacue; Prevatt, J. Walter; Kriese-Anderson, Lisa.
This study evaluates the importance of certain bull characteristics (disposition, EPD's, conformation, etc.) on a cow-calf producer's herd bull purchase decision. Data were collected from the Auburn University Bull Test Sale from 1997 to 2004. A total of 260 buyers purchased a total of 370 bulls during this six-year period. These buyers will be surveyed to determine demographics, farm characteristics, and the importance of factors influencing their bull purchase decision. A hedonic pricing model will be utilized to determine the value that individual buyers place on various factors or bull characteristics when purchasing a bull.

Preferences for Livestock Revenue Insurance Among Beef Producers AgEcon
Fields, Deacue; Gillespie, Jeffrey M..
Personal interviews were conducted with 52 Louisiana cow-calf producers to determine their preferences for a livestock revenue insurance (LRI) product. Conjoint analysis was utilized to determine the importance of selected attributes of insurance policies for these producers. Two-limit tobit models were estimated. Producers were segmented using cluster analysis based upon preferences for LRI product attributes. A multinomial logit model was used to determine differences between characteristics of producers in each cluster. Producers generally preferred higher-premium, zero-deductible products; 180-day policy length; the state price series; and an in-person method of marketing. Cluster analysis yielded three groups of preferences

Alabama Restaurant Preferences and Willingness to Pay for Local Food: A Choice Based Approach AgEcon
Reynolds-Allie, Kenesha; Fields, Deacue.
Direct marketing to restaurants has become increasingly popular as chefs desire high quality, fresh foods to meet the demand of their customers who are becoming more health conscious. Restaurants accounted for approximately 70 percent of the 2009 total food expenditures, and as a result represent a tremendous potential for developing a sustainable network with local growers. This study seeks to determine restaurant/chefs’ preferences for local food in Alabama using choice based conjoint analysis, as well as, determine challenges faced by restaurants interested in purchasing locally. Availability and lack of knowledge are found to be the major barriers to purchasing locally. Results also suggest there is great potential for direct marketing to...

Measuring Retail Service Quality in Farm Supply Cooperatives AgEcon
Wilson, Norbert L.W.; Hall, Thomas; Fields, Deacue.
Based on the Retail Service Quality Scale (RSQS), we develop a tool for mangers of local farm cooperative stores to assess which customer service groups matter to their customers. Principal component analysis (PCA) reveals three customer groups. The results of the multinomial logit model showed younger patrons and homeowners are likely to deem customer service and personal interaction as important. Customers, who consider appearance and accessibility as important, are college graduates and persons dependent on farming. Older patrons and wildlife enthusiasts are likely to view the policies and reliability as important factors of service quality.

BEEF PRODUCER PREFERENCES AND PURCHASE DECISIONS FOR LIVESTOCK REVENUE INSURANCE PRODUCTS AgEcon
Fields, Deacue; Gillespie, Jeffrey M..
Personal interviews were conducted with 52 beef cattle producers in Louisiana to determine their preferences and purchase decisions for livestock revenue insurance. Conjoint analysis was utilized to determine the importance of selected attributes of insurance policies for these producers. The characteristics of producers who prefer given attributes were also identified. Producers rated products given four economic situations to evaluate. A two-limit tobit model was used to estimate the part worth utility values for each attribute. Univariate probit models were estimated to evaluate the influence of producer characteristics on purchase decisions.

THEORETICAL AND EMPIRICAL CONSIDERATIONS OF ELICITING PREFERENCES AND MODEL ESTIMATION IN CONJOINT ANALYSIS AgEcon
Harrison, R. Wes; Gillespie, Jeffrey M.; Fields, Deacue.
The theoretical underpinnings associated with eliciting consumer preferences and statistical properties of alternative models in conjoint analysis are examined. Results show that model selection makes little difference in the context of sign and significance of coefficients. However, results show that tobit is a better predictor of ordinal ranking relative to the probit model.
