The hydrological properties and circulation along the TIP ( Transport Indian Pacific) section between Java and Australia in September 2000 at the end of the southeast monsoon season are described. It is a reoccupation of the JADE ( Java Australia Dynamic Experiment) sections carried out in August 1989 and in February 1992, which encompass the throughflow between the Pacific and the Indian oceans. The net geostrophic transport in September 2000 is of the same order as the August 1989 estimate. The results from the three occupations reveal that the seasonal and inter-annual variability is predominant and during the three cruises the transport evaluations capture the largest variability of the throughflow. |

Because of the high interannual and seasonal variability, transports from the various methods used to estimate the Indonesian throughflow encompass a large range of values. Here, we estimate a temporally integrated transport for the throughflow from comparison of the tritium water column inventory on both sides of the throughflow. Our approach is based on the simple idea that tritium, with a radioactive decay half-life of 12.32 yr, is well suited to infer the transit time ( and consequently the mass flow) of the waters through the Indonesian archipelago. We show that the tritium budget implies a flow of 8.6 +/- 4 Sv, corresponding to a transit time of 10.5 yr. This result, which represents an average over seasons and several ENSO and non-ENSO periods,... |

Results are presented of radiocarbon and tritium measurements along a transect between the Australian continental shelf and the Indonesian coast of Bali. The stations lie in the easternmost part of the Indian Ocean, close to the sills over which the Indonesian through flow (ITF) makes its way to the Indian Ocean. The present data, obtained as part of the JavaAustralia Dynamics Experiment (JADE) in August 1989, complement the WOCE C-14 and tritium data set on both sides of the Indonesian archipelago and give us the opportunity to discuss the origin of the water masses and timescale of the through flow. Both tracers point to a north equatorial Pacific origin of the waters. The comparison of the tritium inventories in the Pacific North Equatorial Current and... |

A multiparametric approach is used to analyze the seasonal properties of water masses in the eastern Indian Ocean. The data were measured during two cruises of the Java Australia Dynamic Experiment (JADE) program carried out during two opposite seasons: August 1989 (SE monsoon) and February-March 1992 (NW monsoon). These cruises took place at the end of a La Nina event and during an EI. Nino episode, respectively. Seven sources have been identified in the studied region for the 200-800 m layer: the Subtropical Indian Water, the Indian Central Water, the modified Antarctic Intermediate Water, the Indonesian Subsurface Water, the Indonesian Intermediate Water, the Arabian Sea-Persian Gulf Water (AS-PGW), and the Arabian Sea-Red Sea Water (AS-RSW). The... |
